Legal Question: Insane defense only works if insane at time of crime...or?

Or also at time of Trial.

Clear to me Trump is weighing the idea of claim of insanity....or checking possible ways to run to Moskow.

You know he isn't thinking about anything other than saving his own ass.

You have to be competent to stand trial in order to get a fair trial.

Separately, the defense may argue that the defendant should be found not guilty due to insanity in the commission of a crime.

His many psychological issues don't qualify, imho.

He knows the difference between right and wrong, he just doesn't care. Actually he does care, he seeks out wrong because he usually sees an advantage to it.

And he understands what's going on around him i.e., he can follow a trial and participate meaningfully in his defense.
