Marc Elias: GOP set up system where Dems expected to be responsible adults and GOP expected to be petulant children

Marc E. Elias
Republicans have set up an asymmetrical system where Democrats are expected to be responsible adults and Republicans are expected to be petulant children.

Brian Tyler Cohen captures this clearly in his new book -- Shameless. Buy it now. https://harpercollins.com/pages/shameless

I wonder how they treated them. I'm baffled by that, doesn't jibe.

still had a very small number of responsible adults.

But then Adam left and Liz got kicked out.

But I think if we had a system like Australia does, where voting is mandatory (a small fine was the result of not voting, as best I can remember), we might not be where we are now. People would be more likely to be engaged and know what’s going on, and we wouldn’t have the “I’m not going to vote because I’m one person and my vote won’t matter,” attitude that’s quite prevalent, especially among younger age groups like Gen Z (it’s well documented that the 18-29 crowd votes at a rate much lower than older age brackets).

Yeah, yeah. I know that the 1A would prohibit this from ever happening (“Freedom of speech means I have a right not to vote”). Only an amendment would make this possible, and the Reichwingers would never let it happen because higher participation elections is when they usually get clobbered.

There are other things would have prevented our current situation, too (or help us out of it, now). If we had instant runoff voting, or IRV, crazies couldn’t win with a plurality due to vote splitting by other candidates [See LePage, Paul (Q-ball). This is how he was elected…twice!]. Killing gerrymandering is another: Politicians choosing their voters contributes significantly to the “My vote doesn’t matter” argument.

But yeah, not happening anytime soon, either. Too much vested interest by US oligarchs for them to let the peons vote. They might have to pay taxes, and they’ve gotta have that new, 150 foot yacht with a helipad and pool.

Republicans run against.

Republicans are innocent bystanders, nothing's their (or their voters) fault. Democrats are so mean to them for no reason, polarizing, divisive, and why didn't Democrats stop them anyway? Must not have wanted to. (Also, Democrats know the future: for example, they knew Roe v Wade would be overturned so why didn't they codify it? Must not have wanted to)

The whining never ends. The Biden administration and now Harris is doing exactly what people say they want. It's amazing. Yet it's always something.
