I was asked to follow up. She is doing well.
The Texas docs diagnosed and told her what her options in Texas were. I was told they did not, could not, encourage her to obtain medical care outside the state. The parents of the child took it from there.
Women with connections or means have a better chance of managing through the hateful cruelty of these Texas laws. Thank goodness for the states that stepped up to say "you can come here."
MOST women faced with these hard choices will not be able to go out of state to get care. A lot of them even struggle to get regular check ups, birth control or prenatal care, let alone anything else. Those of us old enough to be of child bearing age in the 60s and 70s remember. We can't go back. We just CAN'T.
SOMETHING has to be done about the Supreme court.
SOMETHING has to be done to stop politicians from using women's lives as wedge.
SOMETHING has to be done about access to medical care in rural areas.
Thankfully for my niece, she will be OK.
Thank you to everyone who showed support and especially to those who advanced the conversation in the other thread highlighting places women can go for help.

I'm glad she'll be OK but I'm so angry Texas made this awful situation so much worse. I agree with everything you said.

(26,257 posts)Country are dropping like a rock. Not every medical situation is the same, the human body is so different, from person to person, and to willy nilly or shoehorn everybody into a same process (e.g., no abortion despite it may kill the mother and child, or one or the other).
There isn't religious freedom in this Country when all women are subject to the same abortion ban, no matter what.

(3,484 posts)There is a lot of work to do in this country. Women's reproductive health and our horrible health care system needs to be addressed. For a modern country we have areas that maternal and infant mortality rates are of a 3rd world country. With the rulings of the republican packed supreme court all of it has been exacerbated.

I want to believe that we arent going to go back but we already have. Your niece is proof of this. We have to draw a line in the sand that it goes no further.

(1,680 posts)Thank you for posting a follow-up. I am so relieved and thankful that she will be okay. Thank you for being willing to share your family's pain to help others and point out the needless cruelty that denies women compassionate, humane healthcare. Hopefully the resources posted will help other women to get the healthcare they need. We must vote out ANYONE who thinks women should suffer for some twisted, evil ideology. We will NOT go back!

(84 posts)For the update. And thank you for taking the opportunity to remind us of all that is at stake in the upcoming election. Women's rights to their own body, their access to healthcare, and the right to say NO and mean it.
These are not mere abstractions in some policy platform. They are the ground substance of our lives.
What can I do about any of this? Not much directly. But I am looking at my budget resources, and listing for myself, some priorities for donations, admittedly modest. But I can add my small offerings to the thousands of others, similarly motivated. And, we can VOTE.

(1,880 posts)after hearing this. Scary stuff and SO glad she's ok. That said, it just makes me worry and wonder about so many other women who don't have viable options. EFF the Supreme Court Six.
