(1,690 posts)America isn't made up universally decent caring people. That's correct, but that kind of thinking would be American exceptionalism.
I object to their behavior, but you can't make a universal statement about them that doesn't wind up dehumanizing them or othering them as Americans. We're stuck saying that Trump supporters represent the ugliest thoughts and emotions mankind has to offer, and we don't think America should glorify that.

(30,321 posts)Of course "America isn't made up of universally decent and caring people"
Question: What country is?
Answer: None.
Thank you for pointing out what should be obvious.

(1,690 posts)and agree that it's a choice on their part. It's othering at best and dehumanizing more generally. I can't accept their willingness to discriminate and other people they are deluded enough to believe are beneath them, but I'm sure not going to emulate them.

(1,213 posts)Don't get invited to the grownup table. Period.
You 'other' people who are not nice people, all the time, even if you don't want to admit it. Tell us how often you have pedophiles, rapists and serial killers over for dinner. Never, I'd bet. Know why? Their behavior makes them unfit for being in the company of decent people because they go out of their way to hurt people.
Same thing with MAGA. They are terrible people who have gone out of their way to hurt people, and thus have earned scorn and being excluded from polite society. Nobody made them be that way but them. Nobody owes them anything as long as they insist on being awful people.
They can fix that by growing up, growing a brain and growing a heart. Until then, they deserve every ounce of scorn they have earned.

(1,690 posts)It was just predicated on what I viewed as an error in what most Americans think of ourselves. The ones who think we're special are usually pretty crap people, while the ones who would like us to do better acknowledge that we have some problems.

Funtatlaguy
(11,872 posts)This event got WAYYYYYY too little attention in the mainstream media.
And I doubt it got any attention at all in conservative media.
An adult mocking someone with a severe disability is reprehensible and shows so many signs of a very mentally disturbed individual.
Thank you for pointing this out.
It still doesnt get enough attention.

(10,461 posts)point it out every chance I get. I was a Trump agnostic before that. Just another politician, yakety yak. Then he pulled this stunt and I realized he was much worse, a third grade playground bully through and through.

(55,841 posts)Remember when a candidate having possibly maybe technically been sorta less than perfectly buttoned down handling information that was t supposed to be classified but was later deemed to have been retroactively classified was a career-ending scandal of epic proportions?
Then when stealing blatantly labeled classified information, leaving it lying about unlocked and unattended, and even sharing some with random visitors was no big deal?
Fascinating, isn't it?
Republicans had chipped away at this country's sense of decency for decades, he saw that and he finished it off within months of coming down the escalator.
By the fall there was nothing ge could say or do that they wouldn't excuse, and the country rolled over, not holding them accountable at all for enabling him.

(18,456 posts)... to prevent the coronation of the vile and venomous King trDUMP.
If we fuck this election up we can say bye-bye to the the America we know, love, and cherish. Fascism has become very fashionable under trDUMP. But Fascism will bring unfathomable restrictions upon our society and exceedingly detrimental to our longterm cultural well being. Once you start allowing things to become hyper politically regressive it is nearly impossible to change course and right the ship of state. We can not allow these fanatical Nazis to captain this ship or chart the course or influence the destination America chooses to travel now or into the future. They are greedy, they are gluttonous, they are vindictive, they are under handed, they are fabricators, they are liars, they are selfish, they are incomprehensively violent, are vehemently uncompromising, .... the list could go on and on.

(15,316 posts)been destroyed at his own hand (or by his own tongue), but Wall Street and billionaires keep propping him up. Better for shareholder PROFITS, you see, to have the appearance of a horserace.
We must ALWAYS remember these media streaming stations like Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC, the NYT, WaPo and so on are all publicly traded. That is why the media is so biased. Their executives have only ONE fiduciary responsibility and that is to generate PROFITS for shareholders.
That's it. If you want to know more, reference the late Lynn Stout's book The Myth of Shareholder Value. Stout was a distinguished professor of corporate law at Cornell. Her book will give you a complete picture of this legal doctrine of shareholder primacy, established through a MI Supreme Court ruling in 1919 against Henry Ford in favor of the Dodge brothers. When Ford raised the wages for his factory workers so they could afford to buy the cars they built, the Dodge brothers, who held shares in Ford Motor Company sued on the basis that paying his workers 'excessively high' wages deprived them of PROFITS to which they were ENTITLED as shareholders. They won, and this laid the groundwork for our current sociopathic corporate culture.
There is nothing at all about truth in news reporting.
This is the fulcrum, you know. If there were an amendment attached to one of the omnibus bills requiring a change to a stakeholder approach in corporate governance in which the interests of workers, consumers (including truth in news reporting), and the environment were held equal to shareholder profits, and then we had the SEC and other government agencies ENFORCE it with real teeth, we would solve a whole bunch of seemingly intractable problems.
Consider big oil. What if Noble Energy was required to consider the environment equally to shareholder profits? They would have to shift operations away from oil per se and become an energy, rather than an oil company.
And Comcast? What if they were requred to report the actual truth in news (they own NBC, you know)? What if Fox was? ABC (owned by Disney)? See what I mean?
This is why we are so very ignorant as a people. Wall Street wants us that way, because ignorance is better for higher short-term quarterly PROFITS. This is also why we have the right wing war on 'wokeness'. They WANT us to remain asleep. Too bad they overextended so badly with Trump, Project 2025 and Dobbs. We're lucky there. If they would have remained silent and secret about their actual agenda, our republic would probably end in November. Only billionaire hubris has allowed us to push back with real power.
But this huge evil upon us is utterly banal - it stems from the greed of a few people who wish to put the rest of us in an economic stranglehold.

(18,456 posts)Where trDUMP gleefully held a physically disabled individual up to public ridicule in front of his MAGA cult - and they obediently with great enthusiasm - wildly clapped and cheered.
Feeding disabled people to the lions brings happiness and joy to trDUMP's visceral systems and those of his MAGA cult.
THE Tangerine Menace is a sick and vindictive individual way beyond any bounds of normalcy. The slightest provocation, imagined or otherwise, will set him off on his rampage of hatred and vengence.
A person with a healthy and properly functioning mind does not act in this way. Yet we incessantly give him the soapbox so he can habitually contaminate our culture with his abhorrent communications and messages. While claiming that he is the savior chosen by God to save America from itself. And a good portion of the population blindly falls for this madness without any reservations or apprehensions what so ever.
What a pathetic place our society has backed itself into- giving this clown an opportunity to stand at the national podium - spewing his rediculous bile across the American political landscape say after day.
The task of dumbing down America has reached a new pinnacle every time trDump opens his vile mouth, while imparting his wisdom and promises to Make AmeriKKKa Great Again. What an embarrassing charade of qualified leadership trDUMP has foisted upon The United States of America, our country is way better than this.
Vote like there is no tomorrow on our coming horizons - if trDUMP captures his coveted royal throne for round two. Because the idea of no tomorrows - after the coronation of King trDUMP - might indeed acurately become our precognative and preciently predictive ultimate final result.
trDUMP on day one intends to totally vanquish and eventually eliminate those he preceives as disloyal or as political enemies. So then he can consolidate his total power over America, much like the way his dictatorial mentor Putin rules over Russia. Strongman style like Pinochet, where political adversaries simply disappear into dimensions of the unknown - never to be seen or heard from again.
Owning the Libs will not be limited to a political sports gamemanship any longer - but become a death warrant upon the thumbs down signal to the Fascists and Nazis to attack - upon the whims of KIng trDUMP and his royal entourage.
Political progressive and liberals will come under great risk to their physical wellbeing - once King trDUMP fully unleashes his Fascist and Nazi soldiers upon the country side - while Khrishtun Nationalism and a Fascist brand of Dominionist Theocracy is rammed down our throats.

(313 posts)This is something no decent parent would accept from a three-year-old. But tens of millions of Americans want this piece of scum in the highest office in the land. Hillary Clinton attacked Trump over this disgusting act, but it didn't matter. And that's the problem with a cult.
Every time I see this clip, I am physically repulsed at not only Trump but at the people who approved of this sociopathic display of inhumanity. I guess this is another reason the "Evangelical Christians" love this guy so much. Hell, Franklin Graham even came out and defended Trump AGAIN yesterday . . .
All I ask is that somehow, somewhere, this piece of garbage finally gets what he deserves.
