It continues. Six days ago, The New York Times ran a story under the headline Inside the Worst Three Weeks of Donald Trumps 2024 Campaign. Usually, when the countrys most important newspaper runs a story like that, the candidate pays a little attention and the ship begins to right itself. But in this case, its just gotten worse. The ship is capsizing, and the captain is losing his marbles.
Right after that story ran, Trump came out with his wild accusation that Kamala Harriss crowd of thousands at a Detroit airplane hangar was fake. The next night, he did that weird, to borrow an au courant word, interview with Elon Musk, where he made more WTF comments than I can recount, capped by his vow to move to Venezuela (a country ruled by a corrupt autocrat who just cheated massively in this months election) if he loses. On Wednesday, he gave a rambling speech at a North Carolina rally.
Then, on Thursday, we had a little taste of some peak Trump crazy. He claimed Harris is responsible for a law in California that says its OK to steal from a grocery store as long as your take is under $950. (This is not what the law says.) He made strange comments about Cheerios. He lectured Jews (at a later event) about how if the Democrats win, Jewish people dont have a chance in America, saying of Harriswhose husband is Jewishthat she doesnt like Jewish people. You know it, I know it, and everybody knows it, and nobody wants to say it. And we cant forget the assertion that more than 100 percent of recent U.S. jobs have gone to migrants.

(26,507 posts)All these lies, gaffs and just plain outrageous statements have got to have - not only an effect on his bid for the White House - but for all the down ballot Repug races around the country.
Right now - unless he figures out how to right the ship or if Kamala and Tim screw up royally - he's headed for a big loss in November. And along with him will go the Repug Party.
I read somewhere that he now knows that he's headed for a loss. All he'll have left is to claim again that the Dems stole the election from him and he should have won. Maybe we'll see this kicked into the courts for a long time after November.
However, what if he willfully and knowingly is out to tank the Repug Party.
Is this what he means by 'making America great again'? Taking down the Repug Party as he goes down in flames.
What's the saying - anything that he touches 'dies' (goes down with him).
Just a thought.

(9,148 posts)Trumpy Maga election deniers might refuse to certify the vote in some counties. However, its I dont think it will be an easy road from there to the handing the election to Donald Trump via SCROTUS and/or the House.
Also, if Harris wins the blue wall states, their shenanigans wont do much.
Also, the ABA and other groups have basically put election officials on notice that theyre being watched and could face the same fate as a couple of corrupt officials who fucked around in 2020 (jail time, etc.).

(1,067 posts)If the Democrats take the House then that issue is a moot point as the new House is
sworn into session on January 2nd or 3rd. Also the entire Congressional representatives of that state have to vote for the candidate that they want. It must be unanimous. That is how the 1876 election was decided. There was some serious deal making that went on. There is no way that a Democratic Congressional Member from a red state is going to roll over and vote with thier republican counterparts for Donald Trump.
Refusing to certify the election isn't going to work either as that move will be quickly challenged in court and unless definitive proof of voter/election fraud can be proven those election deniers will be ordered to certify the election or be removed or jailed for contempt.

laser focused on Trump but not in a good way...because Joe's debate performance was such a disaster the press had a field day dissecting his age, his walk, his talk, his mental acuity, his physical stamina, his gaffes, his senior moments while they gushed over Trump's "strength", ignoring Trump's stream of toxic vomit...now, with Joe out of the race, Trump is getting "Biden-ed": his age, his walk, his talk, his mental acuity, his stamina, his gaffes, his senior moments...Trump's two so-called press conferences were reruns of the Biden/Trump debate without Biden..lies, conspiracies, insults, threats, race-baiting, antisemitic tropes, a delusional obsession with crowd size, absurdly citing January 6 and MLK (dude, one of these things is not like the other!!)...and try as they might, the cable gasbags and print media cannot normalize the crap that spits from Trump's mouth (AI generated crowds??)
Trump's psyche craves a slavering press and the endless 24/7 news loop, and with every Trump clarion call to a pandering press to "come to Papa" he's got it..

(13,376 posts)The election is very much a toss up for the Presidency and control of the House and Senate. Yes. Be excited. Be joyful. It's contagious! But it's no time to gloat. As Simon Rosenberg and Joe Trippi put it in a great panel discussion the other day:
We gotta keep doing the work. No matter what this thing looks like, no matter what it is, we keep doing the work. They keep doing the crazy, we keep doing the work. And run it up everywhere we can. And fight everywhere, including Texas and Florida.
Rosenberg:
If I can say one last point. . . Everyone's gotta realize what Joe just said is so important. Right now, the people that I'm talking to who are canvassing and making phone calls -- so it's exciting, people are interested. You've got this new candidate, new dynamic. Imagine if you are a marginal voter and you kinda have this new excitement, and then the campaign calls you, or the campaign knocks on your door. Not only is this exciting, but they care about me!
What we are hearing anecdotally from people who are making calls and canvassing, and texting right now, is that the reception is unbelievable. And people are like "thank you for calling me," "I want to volunteer." People are volunteering to volunteer. They are not even having to be asked.
So I think there is this dynamic right now that this huge grassroots army that is already deployed is also moving the needle. It's turning people from potential voters, marginal voters into our supporters. And then that is creating what I call this virtuous cycle of participation. This virtuous cycle is now beginning to kick in in the election.
So anyone who is thinking of working, make your plan now. How are you going to close? Early voting starts in 38 days. What are you going to do? Don't wait. Be active now. It's an amazing time to be talking to voters right now. The response has been incredible. And early vote starts in 38 days. Have your plan now for how you're going to give, how you're going to volunteer, and how you're going to vote on day one. It 's important that everyone vote as early as they can in the early vote. If you do that our campaigns move on to lower propensity voters. It increases voter turn out

It is a great panel!
And there are lots of events -- phone banking, social media strategy, and so on. Plan ahead. If you can, plan time off. Early voting starts in about a month. There will be more and more lies to debunk and supporters to mobilize as the weeks pass

(10,299 posts)its not enough. Yes, his crazy is showing, but his crazy always showed. I want a major public escalation. I want foaming at the mouth and shrieking foul insults. I want him to call his supporters dumb f
.ing patsies on a hot mic. I want him to stomp off the debate stage in a rage and never return.
I want him to make it absolutely, positively, irrevocably clear to all of his slavering supporters that they have made absolute fools of themselves for years by worshipping a carnival barker.
This is fun, but I want to see him ground into the dirt for eternity by Kamalas high heels.

With his abysmal VP nominee helping to drag him down and the very visible deterioration of what remained of his mental competency I'm looking forward to many more, and much worse, weeks for him.
He's rapidly entering 'A Face in the Crowd' territory.

(1,783 posts)One thing I'd like to see the Dems do when we have control is break up the media. No more Citizens United, either. In fact, we need to break up big corporations in general. The country will be the better for it, even though it will be rough for a while.
Also, stricter gun laws, nationwide, no state by state crap.
