Peter Thiel, the tech billionaire who served as the sugar daddy for GOP vice presidential hopeful JD Vances Senate run, who helped kill Gawker, and who names his companies after bits of JRR Tolkein lore, said he's considered leaving the US.
Thiel appeared on a recent episode of the Joe Rogan Experience and told the comic-turned-podcaster that he had recently moved from San Francisco to LA, and was also considering leaving California or the country altogether.
When Rogan asked Thiel where he might move, the billionaire said it was "tough" to find alternatives because while the US had a "lot of problems" in his estimates, other parts of the world were doing "much worse."
He said whatever move he makes, he's only going to move once, and was unsure of whether he'd move to Florida or just out of the country, naming New Zealand and Costa Rica off the top of his head.

(2,956 posts)Thiel noted that the stereotypical right-wing critique of California that it is a poorly governed state with oppressive levels of intrusion and regulation by lawmakers is generally off-base. He said conservatives are always baffled that the state hasn't collapsed into anarchy, but is continuously thriving.
"You know, the macroeconomics of it are pretty good. You know, 40 million people. The GDP is around 4 trillion. Its about the same as Germany with 80 million or Japan with 125 million. Japan has three times the population of California. Same GDP means one-third the per capita GDP," Theil said. "So theres some level on which, you know, California as a whole is working, even though it doesnt work from a governance point of view, doesnt work for a lot of the people who live there."

I can see that US dollars being worth more there would be an attraction. Just wondered if there's anything else that makes South America attractive to wealthy US RWers.

(13,371 posts)He's spending a fortune to F-up the U.S. and then complaining about it?
Peter, why not spend your money making the U.S. more like New Zealand? You know, use your money to move us toward implementing things like universal healthcare, subsidized child care, more affordable higher education, and more, just like New Zealand. As well as things like:
Lower cost of living
Capital gains taxed as ordinary income.
Higher taxes generally for earners over $180,000
Higher business tax rates.
And then there is Costa Rica.
Five tax brackets for corporate income, with a top rate of 30 percent significantly above the OECD average (23.6 percent).
Social programs, including:
Social insurance
The Caja Costariciense de Seguridad Social (CCSS) manages social insurance, which includes programs like Bono Proteger and Subsidio Emergencia. Bono Proteger provides a three-month cash transfer to workers who are laid off, temporarily suspended, or have reduced hours. Subsidio Emergencia is a one-time emergency cash transfer for vulnerable people. The CCSS also offers illness and maternity insurance (SEM), which provides comprehensive healthcare services, including disease prevention, health promotion, rehabilitation, and cures.
Red de Cuido
This program provides a variety of services for older adults, including feeding, hygiene, equipment, social care, housing, and transportation. It also offers health prevention and promotion, and allows networks to hire professional caregivers. As of March 2021, almost 80% of older adults receiving subsidized care received it through Red de Cuido.
Universal health insurance
The Program for Results project "Strengthening Universal Health Insurance" aims to improve the quality and availability of the universal health insurance system.
Disaster Risk Management (DRM) programs
These programs help Costa Rica prepare for disasters through risk prevention and reduction programs.
Higher Education Project
This project aims to improve access and quality to Costa Rica's public higher education system.
Costa Rica also has a guaranteed state pension and free education for its citizens.

Unfortunately, there seem to be a million exceptions to the rule, including "weird". There's probably some linguistic story behind that, likely involving Old English or whatever.

(2,956 posts)Most words that seem to be exceptions to this rule have roots in Old English, such as eight, weigh, neighbor, sleigh, and weird.
Another famous exception is seize, which, although it does come to English from Latin through French, seems to trace ultimately back to Germanic roots.

Taxes are much higher most other developed countries because of their extremely robust, public safety nets...that have to be paid for and which make quality of life much better or everyone, not just the wealthy.

(2,090 posts)That's what annoys me with those wanting to swap policy but just pack up and leave if things go south. And it's not just on the right.
Same sort of frustration I had with celebrities like Jon Stewart, George Clooney, Rob Reiner, and other rich celebs making their thoughts on Joe Biden public. Who cares? They can all live in their mansions with enough money to move to another country, enough money to pay for medical care out of pocket if they lose insurance, no fear of losing their home, etc, if Trump gets re-elected.
The rest of us don't have the luxury. I'm grateful to Joe Biden for stepping down and doing the right thing for the country, but I'll never forgive those pampered celebs who openly stabbed him in the back while he was fighting his way back after his bad debate. He did that for the country as well. He knew timing was key.
