The US is experiencing its largest summer Covid wave in at least two years

https://cnn.com/cnn/2024/08/16/health/covid-largest-summer-wave

It may be time to dust off the face masks and air purifiers.

The US is in the midst of a significant Covid-19 wave, with viral activity levels in wastewater the highest they’ve been for a summer surge since July 2022, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s wastewater dashboard.

The CDC’s measure of national Covid viral activity in wastewater rose to 8.82 on August 10 – falling shy of a peak of 9.56 in July 2022. The CDC says the most recent data is incomplete and may change. Before it started rising again in May, it was at 1.36.

(snip)

“This is a very significant surge. The levels are very high. They’re the highest we’ve ever seen during a summer wave,” said Dr. Marlene Wolfe, an assistant professor of environmental health and public health at Emory University and a program director for WastewaterSCAN. “We’re detecting SARS-CoV-2 in 100 percent of our samples across the country right now.”

that her daughter and niece who is staying with them both tested positive for Covid. Apparently it is a mild form, but they are taking all precautions. They don't have insurance... I offered to pay for Paxlovid for both girls, but as of today we are taking a wait and see stance. So far my girlfriend has not had any symptoms.

The two girls ( 21 and 19 ) had gone to the mall the day or two before and the next day they were "feeling tired" and the next day waking with sore throats and little fever. And testing positive. I had them test twice to be sure. My girlfriend has put a large UV light outside of the bedroom where the girls are and puts their food down in front of the door for the girls to fetch and return the dirty dishes... and the bathroom the girls use is routinely swept with the UV light and bleach. Everyone is masked. Knock on wood it doesn't get any worse than this. Today both girls have less fever but still a sore throat. No cough.

I had COVID like 9 months ago. Worst thing ever... there were times I thought I would die from choking and coughing. I did the Paxlovid right away for 5 days... and damn if it didn't go away in that time. But I was left weak and tired.

Fortunately my girlfriend has all the things from 4 years ago... the UV lights, the gloves, masks, cleaning solutions, etc. She and her daughter went through that entire time and never got Covid... and now that the guard is a little bit down... bam.

My husband and I went to a con yesterday. We were the only ones wearing masks. He's pretty diligent about masking, but I'm not. However, we're going to Rome in 2 weeks, and NOTHING is going to ruin this vacation for us!

the latest vaccine but will help with severity should I contract COVID during the trip. My husband will be getting his booster this week.

I've been planning this trip since January, so I really don't want anything to ruin it.

I know it's probably not the latest version of the vaccine, but I don't care.
