We've always been childless, but we've also been pet-less since our two doggies died in the past two years.
So, today, we brought home two rescue kittens, Steve and Johnny. We adopted them from a local pet rescue organization, and learned yesterday that they're famous in the Twin Cities area. They were rescued at four weeks old from a local cemetery, along with the momma cat. There are TV Video Clips from a local TV station as well as a YouTube video from the Star-Tribune, which you can view below. it's a YouTube Short, so you'll have to click the link to view it.
A boy and a girl pair of litter mates. Since Noon today, they have explored our entire house and are settling in just fine. There's one on my desk, even as I write this.
As official Childless Cat People, we encourage everyone to vote for Harris/Walz and to convince others you know to do the same.

Seriously, they're adorable, although kittens definitely can be pests early in the morning. Welcome to the cult of Childless Cat People!

(3,016 posts)My son and daughter have both moved out with their respective partners. They are both absurdly well-off financially through their own abilities. They have both decided to remain childless, and have several cats and one dog among them.
I am a widower who has always had cats. My current crew consists of two sleek blackies and a grey floofmonster, all from the same feral litter. They revel in literary names: Ulthar Ynxpaht, Miss Katonic Neferkiti, and The Grey Mouser. (Anyone who recognizes the connection among all three names is my friend and soul mate for life!)

I could not deal with replacing a beloved dog.
Cats are so different but they are loving and show much gratitude to those who care for them. Remember now - they are in charge and everything will be fine. You get to pet them when they want - not when you want.😀
They only suck up to you if their food is late.

(151,187 posts)Good for you for caring for feral cats and kittens.
We got lots of advice from the foster of our new kitties. You know, release them in a single room until they acclimate. That kind of thing. Not my style with kitties. What I do, and did, was to put them in the litter box immediately and then leave them to explore the house. They did that in about half an hour, peeking into every corner. Then, they came back to where my wife and I were, ate some kibble and climbed onto our laps for a while.
All acclimated now. That's how I've always done it with new kitties. They figure it out quite quickly. Smart little animals, they are. Tonight, if it goes as usual, they'll be sleeping on us in our bed. I'd be shocked if they didn't. They're home now, and they know it.

(3,057 posts)While we are not childless we might be considered cat people. Five indoor critters and two strays we feed so they'll leave the birdies alone. Three of the indoor cats are litter mates that my wife wouldn't separate, one is a stray from her job. The last one was left in a cardboard box in front of a veterinarians office. I can tell if my wife is in the front yard or the back by which door the cats are sitting at.

(16,609 posts)all of Bess' necessities of food, water and potty have been moved. I came back from an overnight visit totally tired and sick. Bess is trying in all ways to go outside. Because of a horrible flea infestation, I have been keeping her inside. Well the painter has left a door to the porch ajar, windows all open for ventilation and this morning no kitty. I knew what had happened. Luckily do not see any paw prints on the newly painted floor. I knocked on the glass of the door, our signal to come in, which she did. Looking for head scratches which I did but there is definitely a flea treatment in our future, Lordie, I will be happy to get my home back. It really does look lovely so far.

(151,187 posts)Apparently, that person didn't know he had to take both kittens. So, he backed out. We were lucky to have been looking for a pair of littermates, and nobody had grabbed up those two.

(22,557 posts)I haven't listened to WGN in years, didn't know those two were still around. I didn't listen to Steve and Johnnie a whole lot, because they were on overnight, which didn't work with my schefule, but I really liked them.

(54 posts)We've got a full house of kitties (and then some), but we went through a stretch where we fostered for a local rescue. It was incredibly rewarding - we took in our first foster just about 5 years ago; she was maybe 8 months old but had such a serious demeanor. I still smile when I think about the first time I ever saw her actually playing with the toys in the foster room. She's moved across the country now but I still see photos and videos occasionally, and she is absolutely living her best life with wonderful parents and kitty siblings. All of which is to say... fostering is wonderful, rescues do heroic work, and cats make (almost everyone's) life better!
Congratulations on adding Steve and Johnny to your family. May they bring you many years of great joy and comfort.

(23,312 posts)As a kid, we adopted a stray white female - who turned out to be pregnant (and, thankfully, quite healthy).
We were so happy with them all, she and the 4 kittens in all as I recall; I'd often take one to the library on my bike.
Until a malicious neighbor turned us in.
We were struggling, and the apartment was too good a deal - so we had to give them up. This was 40 years ago; I pray they found a good home - hopefully together.
I know they're all together in heaven.
Again - congratulations, and All the Best!
