Leaders in Metro Detroit's Arab American community said to earn their support, Vice President Kamala Harris needs to demonstrate a clear break from President Joe Bidens approach to Israels war against Hamas thats killed an estimated 40,000 people in Gaza.
The Democratic presidential nominee has not done so to date, they said, and some community members are starting to doubt she ever will since four weeks have elapsed since Biden dropped out and Harris assumed the top of the Democratic ticket.
People are starting to lose the hope they had initially that she would do that, said Rima Meroueh of Northville, director of the National Network for Arab American Communities based in Dearborn.
Shes been somewhat signaling that shes not OK with the killing of Palestinians right now, but then the administration announced another arms sale to Israel of $20 billion.
I hope she eventually chooses the well-being of Americans over the well-being of a foreign government.

(19,375 posts)You can lament the system being what it is all you like and it won't change that fact.
If it isn't Harris it will be TCF. If it isn't TCF it will be Harris. That's it. Choose.
And sitting out IS a choice -- for TCF. Only a delusional fuckwit would think that TCF is going to achieve fewer dead Palestinians than Harris.
Is that a ringing endorsement of Harris on this particular issue? Of course not, but it is a fucking binary choice. If you don't support Harris, you are de facto supporting TCF. That's just how the system works, whether or not you like it being so.

But come next January...

It's like they don't understand that the other guy and his son-in-law have designs on leveling Gaza, and selling it off as beachfront property.

Rima Meroueh has a very narrow, simplistic and black-&-white view of the REAL world, doesn't she?

Understand the frustration over Gaza, but the notion that djt would be more sympathetic to that issue is pure fantasy.
Hope it's untrue, but keep hearing murmurs that Arab Americans AND djt crazies plan to disrupt the convention. Hope like hell that doesn't happen.

(35,075 posts)she should go is to say that the United States will enforce our own laws with regard to supplying military aid and support.
Right now, we appear to be in violation of the Leahy Law. And it's not a good look at all. I just saw a headline the other day saying we made more weapons shipments. At the very least, we should have made it conditional. And maybe we did. Not sure.
It's very simple: enforce the law and hold netanyahu accountable for his actions. That approach should not be controversial or divisive.

(313 posts)I've worked with many Arab Muslims, and some I call friends. But I have to question the intelligence and motives of any individual or organization claiming to be "on the fence" about this election. None of the Arab Muslims I know would be hesitating right now. They may not agree with everything Biden and Harris are doing or that Harris has discussed in terms of the present conflict, but anyone of any race or religion who believes there is any decision to make in this race is naive at best and playing games at worst.
If you want a fair, intelligent approach to the Middle East--or to any other issue in the world--how could any sane person think it would be a better idea to go with the demented Donald and his JD than with the integrity of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz?
