(113,824 posts)Somehow, I'm betting you've never even protested. I HAVE MULTIPLE TIMES OVER DECADES. I DID SO PEACEFULLY, NONVIOLENTLY and I RESPECTED THE RESTRICTIONS IN PLACE FOR PEACEFUL PROTEST.
Come back to me when you have.

(106,149 posts)The entire text was "Assholes. Arrest them. Nonviolent protest is one thing. Becoming hoodlums is quite another."
Now, you also didn't state directly that they are violent. but you did call for their arrest, without qualification, and your justification seems to be "they're hoodlums", a term which does imply violence.

Try to actually read the OP and if you possibly can to COMPREHEND context. Breaking through barriers does NOT imply nonviolent protest..
muriel_volestrangler
(106,149 posts)Have you never pushed something non-violently?
It seems to me there are people, like the tweet in the OP, who use the word "violent" when it's just movement they disapprove of.
hlthe2b
(113,824 posts)You are not worth a second more of my (or anyone else's) time since you obviously want violence to ensue and maximum disruption and harm.
muriel_volestrangler
(106,149 posts)"The core meaning of violence is the deliberate infliction of bodily violation or harm on one individual human being by another. " Cambridge Dictionary of Sociology
"Violence is the exertion of substantial force, either physical or emotional, with the intent of causing harm to another individual or group of individuals." Gale Encyclopedia of Public Health
" (1) the use of force to cause physical harm, death, or destruction (physical violence); (2) the causing of severe mental or emotional harm, as through humiliation, deprivation, or brainwashing, whether using force or not (psychological violence); (3) more broadly, profaning, desecrating, defiling, or showing disrespect for (i.e., doing violence to) something valued, sacred, or cherished" Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy
"Violence is an aggressive form of behaviour. It is an intentional act against another person. Generally, violence is a physical act, although it can take the form of bullying. It is illegal to threaten a person with violence. People can suffer mental damage from threats of violence as much as people suffer physical damage from physical attacks." Hutchinson Unabridged Encyclopedia
"Violence is a property of force. A force is violent if it violates, i.e. if it breaks and destroys that to which it is applied." Palgrave Macmillan Dictionary of Political Thought
and so on. So, no, pushing barriers aside that separate one part of a public space from another is not "violence".
hlthe2b
(113,824 posts)I'm done with you.
muriel_volestrangler
(106,149 posts)You just misuse the word 'violence' a lot. I'm not even sure which group you mean by "this group". The police? No, I'm not advocating harm against them. The media who filmed it? No, not against them either.
I've not made any "vile suggestions". Hell, I've not even made a suggestion. I pointed out your claim of having said "if" was wrong.
Geechie
(1,044 posts)Did you even watch the clip? Nothing violent. People carry signs & shout slogans in a demonstration. Oh. The horror!!
edisdead
(3,396 posts)If they did you have to assume they will force their way into the convention.
Sorry. I personally am not a fan of pushing protests away to a point where it is ineffective but at the same time if they are not obeying the permits and regulations they must be treated as potentially dangerous.
muriel_volestrangler
(106,149 posts)Their chant after getting through the barrier was "our streets!" - which seems to mean they were pissed off at not being allowed to demonstrate on the public street. There is much difference between demonstrating in a public place without permission, and forcing your way into a building. So why you you feel you "have to" assume they'll try it?
hlthe2b
(113,824 posts)Stop trying to start something that was not stated nor even hinted at. JUST STOP IT!!!

hlthe2b
(113,824 posts)Breaking through barriers does NOT imply nonviolent protest.. And those responding, restraining/arresting before anyone is harmed is the sane response. When you have participated in as many protests as many of us here have or even read a little history of nonviolent protests, you will understand the importance of getting your message across--which ENDS when it becomes conflict.

Arrest several hundred of these rioters, charge them and put them in jail for a week. Let them pay lawyers and have an experience with the U.S. Criminal Justice System for breaking the law.

(1,750 posts)I can say things will be really bad under Trump. I don't think protesters understand this fact. Trump plans to rule like an authoritarian who will not follow norms.
I know Gaza situation is extremely complex. It is not as simplistic as -why don't we just withhold bombs from Israel. There are guidelines that have to be followed which is laid down by state department. Yes, Presidents can tweak sometimes but not that easily. Biden is doing his very best. It is not easy as both sides are deeply flawed as innocent's lose lives. Gaza protesters have to realize that Hamas and Netanyahu are two sides of the same chaotic coin.

(4,528 posts)Dont get me wrong. They have every right to protest . I have protested stuff in past years.
However, THEY WILL NOT STOP our work.
The convention will go on, it will be successful and we will come out of there with FABULOUS MOMENTUM AND ENTHUSIASM for Kamala and Tim!!!
Further, Kamala will likely reiterate her hope and work for a cease-fire.
Meanwhile, the protests are a sideshow which, to me, will stop nothing!!
kansasobama
(1,750 posts)There is no context for these protesters. Hamas did attack Israel in October 2023. Yes, Netanyahu is an idiot. We are not looking at two angels here. There are bad guys on both sides and innocent victims on both sides

Hope our Arab Dems help educate these protesters that Trump plans to invoke the insurrection Act to silence protests and use his immunity to order Justice Dept to imprison Arab citizens or send them to Guantanamo under the pretext they are Hamas. Do not help Trump say these are all Hamas. Gaza supporters are not Hamas.

Protest all week, they are demonstrating a level of ignorance of how a constitutional democracy works in a republic. Their biggest political allies are inside the convention hall, representing the best of what they will ever be able to get, so it's pretty clear they are after something else. Why not just come out with it?

(1,213 posts)I don't remember so much coverage of the riot in LA during the 2000 convention. And, yes, there was one, after the fascist LAPD attacked people attending the Rage Against the Machine concert across the street from the convention--both during the concert itself and especially after as the people were trying to leave after the pigs told them to disperse.
The sooner the fascist LAPD are nuked to the Kuiper belt, the better.

(3,684 posts)The Chicago police have lots of experience dealing with this kind of thing. I would be shocked if anything gets out of control. Also, in my experience, they can be very smart and very firm when they want to.
Dont play fk around and find out with CPD. I know people that found out.
