As everyday Americans tune in to watch Kamala Harris receive her partys nomination, they should trust what they see with their own eyesespecially as D.C.s chattering class tries to gaslight them.
And now, more than ever, we should ask who all of thisthis punditry, this hobnobbing, this navel-gazingis really for.
Because if this summer has revealed anything, its that, just like the Scott Walkers of yore, we are watching the national media short-circuit before our very eyes. They are insular. They are unprepared. And after years of watching Morning Joe and searching for their birthdays in the Politico Playbook, they do not see their role as speaking to us, but rather speaking to themselves. While this may seem ancillary to the main plotline of our national politics, the mainstream media own-goaling themselves out of civic relevance is a net negative for anyone who believes in the outcome of better, more representative, good government.
For years, largely because Republicans are better at working the refs and crying foul about any effort by the media to hold them accountable for their actions, the idea that the media are dyed-in-the-wool liberals has become the orthodoxy. Of course, the Beltway media are conservative. This is not a novel argument by any means: Its an industry run by (increasingly reactionary) plutocrats, who reliably summon their charges to lead a highly effective, But how will you pay for it? pincer movement against anything resembling liberal policy. Meanwhile, there is seemingly no sin grievous enough to earn a Republican the same sort of nullifying skepticismthe Trumpists who aided and abetted the former presidents attempt to overturn a lawful election remain in the good graces of Americas cable news bookers.
Still, we need to acknowledge that the media are conservative in the most traditional, unideological sense of the word: They are clinging to a status quo, their status quo, that has not matched our reality since Barack Obama was elected president in 2008 and the Tea Party emerged as the energized manifestation of Ronald Reagans 1980s fever dreams. Their rules, their conventional wisdom, their savvy takes become more stale, more detached from normal life, and more cartoonish with every passing day.

(20,897 posts)Rachel, Chris, Jen, Stephanie, Lawrence compared last night to the RNC.
"Joy and excitement" were adjectives were stressed last night lacking at the other's convention they said. I saw smiles on their faces as well. All mentioned "what a deep bench the Democrats have".

(7,632 posts)It cannot be stopped providing information on subjects its inadequately qualified to cover. But if a sponsor pays them some money, theyll broadcast it. Its commercial media, for Gawds sake, theyre paid to sell us stuff.
Therefore, the media is a jungle of content and opinions. Dont expect one outlet out there to be a beacon of truth.
Just take it into consideration, this is somebodys job to send me this stuff, not their mission. Theyre paid to operate commercial media outlets.
Its just business.

(8,295 posts)I watched PBS's coverage last night, as that WAS my trusted TV station. Their talking heads yammered over speakers, including Senator Warnock. I was so angry.
Today I could watch Warnock's magnificent speech online, which made me even madder that some yoinks talked over it. Did send PBS an email suggesting they actually cover the convention.
Tonight I will stream directly from DNC.

(62 posts)I was watching PBS and their pundits, and I was trying to figure out what the hell David Brooks was going on about. It made no sense. I could not figure out why anyone would have him on as a talking head. Remember David Brooks' "Bidens Economy" meme about that high cost of airport burgers and whiskey shots. So anyway I kept hearing the crowd going wild in the background and wondered if Bruce Springsteen showed up or something. Then it dawned on me I didnt have to watch PBS so i switched channels and caught the last of Jasmin Crockett.
Tonight I will watch C-Span.

(15,377 posts)No bullshit, just the actual event.
The event itself is a performance. Watching bullshit artists explain the performance to you is kind of a weird way to watch a performance.
Its science fiction theater 3000 but without the irony.
