The roll call of states? I don't understand.

I'm watching on C-SPAN and they say they're about to do the roll call of states. I thought they did that already a couple of weeks ago by Zoom or Skype or something, because they had to beat the deadline to get on the ballot in all 50 states. To beat the deadline in Ohio specifically, as I recall. Somebody who understands what's happening, please explain it to me.

I wish I had waited just two or three minutes before posting this. And you're right, it is fun to watch. It's a tradition.

All of the deadlines were either already after the convention, or were moved until after the convention - including Ohio.

(Sorry - I'm just tired of the gaslighting on Ohio's deadline which was settled long before the first debate, then trotted out to add pressure to get the vote over with early in order, to shut down the pressure on Biden.)

As for tonight - ceremonial.

state of such and such, home of the xyz' proclaims that they are present and ready for action or something like that.

Like I said, it's neat to watch every state respond.

It’s pretty standard to see the roll-call used as a gesture. For example, back in 2008, although everyone knew Obama would win in a landslide, a number of states passed so that New York, with Hillary Clinton as their spokesperson, would announce the clinching delegates as a sign of unity.

Back when the roll call was really the nomination process states would pass until they saw how things were going.
