I'm kinda like, WTF? These protesters really aren't prepared to protest (besides sitting in the street). The cops just take out their clubs and swat them.
They will probably become more organized in the future....

(55,371 posts)They are sitting in the street, blocking traffic. I would consider this peaceful nonviolent civil protest like sit-ins in the South during Jim Crow.
OTOH, their premise for protesting is IMO a contradiction. They are fundamentalist Orthodox Jews who want Israel to be expanded to incorporate land they claim was given to them by God in The Old Testament. They are violent when trying to seize homes in the West Bank. They want the Israeli military to destroy Hamas, even if non-Hamas Palestinians are harmed or killed. And keep Gaza when it's all over. Yet they don't want to risk their lives for their country and allow non-Orthodox citizens to fight for them. It's inconsistent.

They just look whimpy. Yet this is Israel, not the US in the 1950's. They live in a police state, yet they're sitting there like lanky teenagers on their mothers' couch! In come these cops with clubs and whack-a-mole!

(34,852 posts)I know they're allowed to protest. But you would think they would anticipate a bit more of a reaction from LE?

(55,334 posts)Except you can't tell their cause from their action. The definitely need signs up. And just like they do in Iran, those signs need to be in English.
But the point of nonviolence is to provoke police reaction. The police there knew this and didn't overreact.

(34,852 posts)I'm more used to modern protests. Police in a line. Protesters in a line etc. But they are throwing themselves in harms way. But when that happens here, they stop all the traffic, cordon off the protesters and get a paddy wagon, then cuff'em.

It looks like these guys want the benefits of a modeern state but not the responsibility. Israel lives in a bad neighborhood. The government needs to crack down on those guys.

(114,667 posts)back when we had one doesn't mean it's appropriate in Israel, when everyone has been needed during wars.
The US lives in a safer 'hood. We can afford an all volunteer military (smartest thing we ever did) and the rabidly religious can avoid military service. Our situation is different. I think those guys blocking traffic are about to find out just how different.
