to white males, look at what has happened just in the last few hours. Right now, two absolute drooling idiots and moral degenerates are commanding press attention, and one is a candidate for President with a decent chance of winning!
NEVER, never would a minority male or a woman of any race with so little to offer be seen by anyone as worthy of attention.
And yet, our nominee Kamala Harris just gave a truly historic acceptance speech at the convention. She's a master communicator and an intellectual giant. But it's not enough. She must answer questions according to the corporate media's schedule because she may not be able to handle whatever it is they decide is important. There is no way she will be judged equally when she does do such an interview. We all know that.

(171,704 posts)no male Democrat could behave like Trump and be taken seriously in any way, no matter WHAT their color

(24,973 posts)they have a lot of power thanks to the electoral college. But culturally, there is a certain "respect" that white males are generally given, especially if they act like know it alls and exude confidence. A woman or man of color who did that with nothing to back it up would be laughed off the stage before their career could even start.

(24,973 posts)and just to be clear, I am married to a white male who is self-deprecating inspite of being very intelligent and talented, and who admires and respects women. Of course he's a Dem.

the fear of losing their white privilege is what is driving the maga movement. having to compete with the other scares the hell out of them.

However, I have f'd up so many times in so many ways. I walked around the embodiment of the "imposters syndrome" - knowing I was 80% fake.

(56,198 posts)by leveraging privilege i mean not just *being* white, male, etc., but also exercising and defending those privileges, pushing for more privilege, reminding people of those privileges, and extending the power of privilege.
thanks in large part to republican "identity politics" (as much as the whine about it, that's what they're all about), the republican philosophy is all about leveraging privilege, and the democratic philosophy is largely about combatting that.
so a white male democrat is white and male, sure, but is seen in some respects as a traitor to his class or privilege box by siding with blacks and women and so on. essentially, he forfeits a lot of that extra privilege that is needed for the highest office in the land.
the one thing donnie is is pure privilege. his incompetence, stupidity, and lack of a moral compass work in his favor by making him a pure beacon of privilege. so for people who like the concept of privilege, there's no better leader than someone whose accomplishments can't be attributed to anything other than pure privilege.

(4,553 posts)White male Democrats aren't given the same white man's pass as republicans. In the old South there was a term for any white male who was seen as betraying their race. It was a hyphenated word, the second part being "lover." That term isn't used anymore, but many white Americans still see things the same way. I posted yesterday how Democrats, white male or otherwise, aren't given the credit they deserve while republicans get all the credit they don't deserve (economy, national security, etc.). It's because those white Americans assume that a (basically) all white party is more competent at solving America's problems. It's just part of the American DNA.

(3,933 posts)the average person will miss them. It will be parsed over time as the recognition by a black woman of how she has taken the responsibility of white privilege and elevated to American privilege.
It is a courageous leap of confidence that has been waiting for this moment.
So happy to have been witness to the shade thrown at those who will never acknowledge it even if they even recognized it.

(56,198 posts)the acendency of obama and hopefully harris to the presidency.
we all know women and minorities have to work twice as hard for half the reward, but even that's not enough.
obama was a once-in-a-lifetime leader, and once he got won the nomination over hillary (who certainly would have made an excellent president and just had the bad luck to run against obama's big moment), he should have sailed into the oval office.
and i suppose he did, though it was never a landslide. but early on, shrub was such a disaster that the powers that be made it clear that the only real battle for the presidency that cycle was the democratic primary. shrub was just so awful and tanked the economy there was just no way a republican was winning.
dumb luck of timing as well for mccain, who was one of the better republicans (very low bar, i'll admit)....
and now harris is running against donnie, who somehow makes shrub look competent and normal.
i don't think it's coincidence that shrub's incompetence paved the way for a black man and donnie's incompetence is now paving the way for a black/indian woman.
that's taking away nothing from the incredibly high standards to which obama then and harris now perform. but i agree, privileged people and those perceived as the guardians of privilege have incredible advantages, and they have to really screw up for someone with less privilege to win.
i mean, donnie with zero experience won over hillary, the most experienced and qualified candidate ever. literally everything donnie has ever accomplished in his life he owes to privilege. he certainly doesn't have anything else to offer.

(3,457 posts)Not by any stretch that the Focksnoozes or Newsmaxes will try to construct. The corporate media will try to overwhelm her into a faux pas and force her to become a political version of Simone Biles that has to negotiate a plethora of flaming hoops to remain relevant.

(15,395 posts)Non white males will most likely follow the dude club rules, especially when it comes to the wealthy hierarchy; after all, the only color moneyed folks recognize is green. A wealthy black, latino, or Asian man is probably going to be just as interested in getting wealthier as white men with money.
However, they know most women in a position of power won't put up with dude-bro antics, even if they were greedy. And white women in power remind them of wives or mothers when they exert their power; they're more likely to make them look small in public.

(15,425 posts)horseraces and gotchas as it is, irrelevant. Their social media director is instead pushing out messages to social media to attract young voters, minorities and others who simply don't watch news on CNN, ABC, NBC, etc. They don't. They don't attribute credibility to anyone on MSM and I mean anyone.
They get their news from Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Reddit and so on, and they attribute the most credibility to Seth Meyers, John Oliver and Jon Stewart.
Seriously.
This is what my late-30s kids and their friends tell me, at least.
