(28,706 posts)Unlike a candidate trying to get ON the ballot and having to settle for write-ins
we have lots of experience with candidates dropping out but remaining on the ballot. Their support fades dramatically.
Essentially
all that will be left are the people clearly looking for a way to say neither of these two

(2,248 posts)He's saying he's still a candidate but he was going to attempt to remove his name from swing states so that he didn't play "spoiler". Mixed-messages doesn't seem very helpful to Trump.

They're still on the ballot, but their support drops off precipitously because virtually everyone knows that they've quit the race.
I doubt that it makes much difference since his supporters all knew that he was never going to win. They were only voting for him because the two main candidates were unacceptable to them.

(2,248 posts)I've never seen a suspended candidate openly tell their supporters to still vote for them. Kennedy explicitly told his supporters in blue/red states to still vote for him and the he could still win a contingent election.
It is not the same.
