Germany festival stabbings: Three dead after horrific knife rampage at diversity event
At least nine people have been stabbed and multiple dead at a festival in Germany.

Three people are reported to have died and nine more fighting for life after a frenzied attack at a festival in Germany.

Initial reports suggest three people were killed after being targeted in a random knife attack.


The violence unfolded at the Festival of Diversity in Solingen, a city around 25km east of Dusseldorf. The attack happened on a central square, the Fronhof.

Pictures and videos on social media show a huge police response with large parts of the city cordoned off.

The dpa news agency cited unidentified police sources as saying the weapon was believed to be a knife.


According to local outlet Solinger Tageblatt, one of the festival organisers, Philipp Müller, said on a stage that emergency workers were fighting for the lives of nine people.

1. This is about 25 KM from where I live

It is now happening more than once a year in Germany. An American might say, oh, well, if it had been the USA, it would have been 40 people killed by gunfire. That is hardly a consolation in a country where this was unimaginable a couple of years ago. If the ethnic identity of the killer turns out to be the same as that of previous attackers, it will only help out the xenophobic extremist right. Any calls for "tolerance" will only add fuel to the fire. If this is what I suspect it is, it the lone act of a deranged young immigrant male who just did a million of his Germany-based countrymen the worst disservice he possibly could have done.

2. definitely. 3 people killed in USA would not even get national press unless something unique... like kids or celebrity

I can see by following European news, that these stabbings are happening more frequently. Stay safe!!

3. I head back over there tomorrow.

There will definitely be a far bigger police presence at train stations and airports than before. But like the mass shooting at Las Vegas, or even the October 7th attack at Ashkelon, if there is a large gathering in an open place, there isn't much that can be done if such an attack comes without warning.
