General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsMy take on Gus,
Those of you who know me, will get this. I have bit my tongue for a few days, on this, but no more.
There are many times, over the years, I had to " get physical" with LilBit, in order to protect her.
Be it to pull her outta the way of a foul ball at a ball game, to catching her when she fell off the couch while dancing.
I did exactly what Tim did, I protected my child.
No one called me an abuser, they called me,LilBit's Dad.
Well done Gus's Dad !!!

Walz, on a national stage, millions watching, cared about his son.
I was at a ball game and at home.
Tells me his character.

But what do you expect, when they ridiculed his genuine display of love for his father during the applause? Theyve always tried to make something dirty out of Joe Biden, kissing his grandchildren for chrissakes

(3,317 posts)We used to talk about some silly stuff,, I grew up in the 60s,. A couple months ago, she asked me, " I see my grandchildren, being , coddled. There's no discipline other than soft words. Did I raise you badly?"
I told her,
" Mom, you and Dad used belts, I was thrown through a wall by Dad. You guys, would be in jail today. The only reason you met LilBit, is, everytime you hit me, I learned love. And 45 years later, I adopted her. Mom, you taught me love, through your hate."
Yeah barb, my family was dysfunctional as well

(7,401 posts)My husband tended to walk out in front of cars in parking lots and right into things in crowded places. We were friends since age 8. Holding onto him or redirecting him was so automatic that I never even realized I did it until this hubbub over Gus and the teleprompter. I didn't even notice it when it happened.
Also, you guys might flame me for it, but I don't understand why everything needs a label. Everyone learns differently. Everyone has different gifts and challenges. Everyone has quirks. To sort of quote Forest Gump's Mom - If God wanted us all the same, then everyone would walk into teleprompters.
Edit to add, yes my husband was autistic - as diagnosed very late in life. He drove, he worked, he loved, he functioned in society. He had some quirks and challenges ... and we all do.

(1,409 posts)My first grade teacher gave me all A's on my report cards. Then she wrote in her comments each month that "I can't make her stop talking", "I can't make her sit down", "She is still talking all the time and will not stay at her desk" and so on till the next to last monthly comment was - you guessed it - "Please make her sit down and shut up".
A few years later my oldest son's kindergarten teacher called me in for a conference to tell me she just didn't know "what I'm going to do with little Eugene". All I could say to her was, "Me, too!"
That's when I first wondered whether I might be hyper, like he was. And remembered my own first grade report cards. Which I still have and drug out to remind myself. And I remembered how my own mother "handled" it - she chuckled at the notes, then ignored it.
And so I hugged him and praised him some more.
Sending hugs to Gus and his family, too. Someone did some good work and good loving there. He expresses himself and his emotions beautifully.

I did take him for evaluation when he was young & they thought he didn't quite meet the need for meds, but he definitely has the distraction and obsessive tendencies that I have. I guess he got enough calmness from my husband to balance it out better!

My view is that Walz is caught between a rock and a
hard place wrt Gus. Here's why.
Being nd and a little immature, it's quite possible that
big crowds, late nights, and over-stimulation can be
too much for Gus emotionally. I know this is true bc
I have a niece who is nd and I've seen it in person.
You love your child. If you don't include them, they
will feel hurt and left out. If you do include them,
they may get over-stimulated. In a political situation
like this, where Republicans are just looking for something
attackable, you can't win for losing... unless...
you are Tim Walz, Gwen Walz, Kamala Harris, and good
Democrats who see through what Republicans are doing...
and that it's very clear that the Walzes and the whole
family are grounded in love.
We all know what we saw... love.
And that is that.

(26,257 posts)was overly aggressive or the like. Not in the least. And for those making these idiotic statements, doom and gloom and such, f**k them. No matter what anyone does, they're going to see the negative in anything going on w/ Walz or Kamala, they are that desperate to pin something on them that's negative, will stick. As we all noticed, the idiotic repugs were caught off guard big time, and they are still trying to catch their breath, being that their esteemed leader who's a big fat joke, isn't leading them (or rather, he's leading them all off a cliff to their doom).
Perhaps someone knows this, the numbers of republicans that have flocked to Kamala's banner? I have seen the numbers of ethic groups supporting Kamala:
-She has garnered significant support from various ethnic groups, particularly among Asian, Black, and Latino communities.
-Significant support from immigrant communities, a big big plus. Especially Latinos in FL, etc;
-And I'm guessing here, significant support from those on Social Security AND those that are disabled;
- And of course Female voters in overwhelming numbers, as tRUMP and vance continue their despicable nonsense against women (witness the Nikki Haley voters moving over to Kamala's banner, WONDERFUL!
-And of course vast numbers of white democratic voters, mostly in urban centers;
-On a positive note, djt is losing sizable percentages of his 'poorly educated voters' (I personally think that these people are tired of being insulted by tRUMP, and I don't blame them one bit). As we've all seen over the last several years or plus, those finding jobs haven't necessarily needed degrees, but trade craft experience/certificates.
-Sizable numbers of military veterans. These people are tired of being insulted by tRUMP too.

that they were left without much but to attack a young man with disabilities
who cheered for his father in tears.... That's it and that's all.
Reminded me of this incident in political history...
Back in 1972, Senator Edmund Muskie, the front-runner for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination,
(Hubert Humphrey's running mate in 1968),
was routed out of the race by accusations from the far-right Manchester NH newspaper,
the 'Manchester Union Leader', owned by a notorious right-winger whose name I do not recall anymore,
that he was crying in public while responding to attacks which that newspaper made about his wife.
As it happened, it was snowing heavily when he made his statement outdoors,
so the alleged tears may have actually been only snowflakes melting on his cheeks.
Never the less, he was forced to withdraw from the campaign over this incident,
since back then especially, it was "unmanly" to cry.
Well, there is nothing wrong with crying, whether it actually happened or not,
unless you are not a human being!
In any case, Gus's tears were "tears of joy",
and many such tears were shed by speakers at our convention!
At least we have moved a bit beyond such attacks against politicians,
and now the Republicans are left with attacking a young man with disabilities who isn't on the ballot...
I suppose that is "progress" in comparison to 1972,
but not so much progress in terms of respect for fellow human beings
who may have disabilities but also have feelings.
