his backyard after a rain. As it references, that is the most common way it is transmitted to humans:

Since West Nile was first detected in the U.S. in 1999, it’s become the most common mosquito-borne illness in the country.

The bugs become infected when they bite sick birds, then spread the virus to people through another bite.

Cases tend to peak in August and September, often following rainy seasons. The bugs lay eggs in standing water.

So far this year, 216 human cases of West Nile have been reported in 33 states, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The illness caused what’s known as neuroinvasive disease, such as brain inflammation, in 142 of those patients, the CDC reported.

But, it is in those big 55-gallon plastic garbage cans.

I collect "rainwater" (such as I can being in Southern California - The last time it really rained was January.
We had maybe 5 minutes of drizzle a couple of weeks ago).

Whenever I collect rainwater, such as it is, I just simply go down to my local pet store, like Petsmart , and buy some 'feeder fish' goldfish. Total cost is about one dollar for 5 or 6 fish. Throw them in the water.

They eat any eggs. Those things never hatch to get to mosquito larvae because they are eaten first by the fish.

Last year I noticed a tadpole in the water, I’d never seen one before. I thought it would turn into a frog. After doing research found out it’s just another cycle of the mosquito. If I see the larvae I toss the water. Cats use it more than the birds, although the birds used to come and drink and bathe. I miss them, but I have a larger one I can still watch them.

We have a deck which the outdoor faucet is located, I believe that it holds water and therefore mosquitoes. I need to sweep some of those flakes down there and see if that helps.

WTG, on collecting the rainwater. It can make a difference!

In an emergency, which hasn't needed to happen the past few years, I can use it as drinking water (boiling it first), but I mainly use the "tap water" from the hot water faucet line going to my water heater for that purpose.

was the first person to die from West Nile, decades ago. That was here in Colorado, and maybe across the entire nation??????

We have all kinds of cute stuff here in Colorado, maybe we should run ads all across the nation of some of them. Then, maybe, people would stop moving here in droves.....

Last year, a woman found a dead rabbit on her lawn, and threw it in the trash. She came down with Tularemia, (rabbit fever) and died.

A kid was tossing a football with a friend, and went into a prairie dog field colony to get the ball, came back out and continued to play catch........Less than 24 hours later he was dead.......from Pneuomonic? Plague......(Circa 1918 pandemic flu around the world)

Some people end up with permanent disabilities from Lyme disease. I guess also with West Nile. It amazes me that with all the things trying to kill us that we were still able to over populate the planet.

so no worries for now. Next few days will be wet, though, since the heat dome that blocked our monsoon season has finally moved to the east. Still, 99.9% of cases of mosquio borne illness in this state are in people living near the river. I'm several miles away and about 1000 feet higher.

Best thing about living in the desert is being able to go outside and watch the sunsets without being bitten to death.

but you might find a big correlation between lowland areas versus areas higher in the mountains. Water would be flowing more swiftly up in the mountains and the higher elevations would be above the mosquito line.

Dengue is one of those diseases that scares the crap out of me. The vaccine is only 80% effective because it covers only 4 out of 5 strains. It's moving north, too.

The FDA approved a vax for Chikungunya, so that's one off the list.

Get well soon, Dr. Fauci.

Hard to believe we've come to a time when a great man such as Fauci is despised by a massive number of Americans. Trump brought out the worst in many Americans.
