They are beans, in the same family as soy and peas. But there are kids who have allergies to real nuts (which are usually called "tree nuts" by those who are or know people who are allergic to them). However, coconuts are not in either class. Yes, it's confusing. Those darned taxonomers should have considered food allergies when they came up with names for foods. (JK)
