He played everyone, from the republicans to the talking heads and those within the party who wanted him out.

Probably one of the most effective moves in politics in decades if not ever.

My guess is that, as usual, they were scared of the attack from the fascists that her nomination was undemocratic. Also as usual, these super smart self-anointed leaders both overthought the 'problem' and underthought their 'solution'.

especially if the pressure was on from the big donors who just wanted someone younger. The Bidens and Clintons have dealt with politics long enough to envision what a chaotic mess a split convention would be - so they avoided that by putting together a plan behind the scenes.
