NYT-Trump Can Win on Character by Rich Lowery, editor in chief of National Review

snip-"Presidential races are won and lost on character as much as the issues, and often the issues are proxies for character. Not character in the sense of a candidate’s personal life, but the attributes that play into the question of whether someone is suited to the presidency — is he or she qualified, trustworthy and strong, and does he or she care about average Americans?

Presidential races, in this sense, are deeply personal; they usually involve disqualifying the opposing candidate, rather than convincing voters that his or her platform is wrongheaded."

snip-"Of course, Mr. Trump doesn’t need much convincing to launch personal attacks. He said earlier this month that he feels “entitled” to them. But calling Ms. Harris dumb or questioning her racial identity does more to undermine him than her. The point isn’t to be gratuitously insulting, but to make a root-and-branch argument that she shouldn’t be — can’t be — president."

More there.

here's a link, no firewall. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/26/opinion/advice-for-trump-win.html?unlocked_article_code=1.F04.904Q.RMvTqwRirncp&smid=url-share But I advise skipping it, though reading the comments - in which the author is righteously dragged - might relieve your nausea a bit. And we must keep in mind that Lowry is the same clueless muppet who wrote this about Sarah Palin:

I'm sure I'm not the only male in America who, when Palin dropped her first wink, sat up a little straighter on the couch and said, "Hey, I think she just winked at me." And her smile. By the end, when she clearly knew she was doing well, it was so sparkling it was almost mesmerizing. It sent little starbursts through the screen and ricocheting around the living rooms of America. This is a quality that can't be learned; it's either something you have or you don't, and man, she's got it.

He was pilloried relentlessly and deservedly for this, but I guess he's continuing to show us that he's a right moron.

VP Harris hasn’t winked at him and she’s never going to.

He claimed that liberals had sissified politics, so Al Franken challenged him to a fistfight. Of course Lowry refused.

...one of the cable screamfest shows and thinking, "what a lightweight!". One really can't help thinking that like Tucker Carlson, Lowry wouldn't be in nearly as advantageous a position in life without the wealthy-white-guy affirmative action of the old boys' club. Seeing his prose here defending candidate Sarah Palin--of all people--just confirms the correctness of such a view.
