My older brother was a Tomb Sentinel.
He returned from Vietnam in 1968, and stationed at Arlington (Ft. Myer), was burying soldiers who died where he had just returned from alive.
It did a number on him.

(412 posts)Trump is a horrible person.
it appears as though the treasonous one was happy to give a thumbs up to all the suckers and losers in arlington national cemetery. the only suitable place for the traitor will be a landfill.

(12,515 posts)One day while waiting for his kids (I was in the back of the VW bus), he broke down and spilled his guts after I asked him if he was okay that day.
It was heart wrenching and he apologized over and over. He didn't know why he just spilled his guts out to a 16 year old girl.
Luckily he told me he was going into therapy and he seemed pretty glad about it. He cried, I cried. It was odd but I could see how cathartic it was for him.
This was in 1983.
My dad was enlisted but they kept him stateside. Not sure why but most of the guys he trained and became friends with, were killed in the war. It haunted him. He hated war movies.

I remember him leaving the room whenever the news would cover the war.

(421 posts)the actions of donald trump at arlington only reinforce the opinion that he is a stain on this nation. i have been to arlington many times and could never imagine that anyone could be so callous, but in my nearly 76 years on this earth i have never seen anyone who has so enjoyed tearing down the traditions and institutions of a nation that has benefited this low rent piece of human waste.

I've been to Arlington and it tore me up seeing JFK's eternal flame and all those white headstones. It was very quiet amongst all the people there at the same time I was. I don't even have the words to describe how much I despise him and anyone that backs him, not just in Congress but out here in the country. If I know that someone is a trumpster magat, I refuse to have anything whatsoever to do with that person.
i grew up about 5 miles from the cemetery. visited there often and it was my favorite place to visit in the 35 years i lived in alexandria. anyone, other than the damnable defiler, will tell you that political beliefs and demonstrations should be left off of the grounds of this most hallowed place.

(3,032 posts)It was in the Summer of 1964, and I was a teenager, visiting from Illinois.
The grave was fresh, and the only monument was a temporary generic grave marker and the flame.
It was raining that day.

(233 posts)I found the name of the neighbor kid who was so nice to us little squirts before he went in the Army and to Vietnam on the wall. It was intense. I can't imagine the audacity to stage a photo op. Absolutely disgusting.

(44,738 posts)I get the Memorial Calendar each year. It is also intense. One might feel sorry for a thing like trump and his inability to FEEL the emotions relative to patriotism and love of country and sadness reading the names of those who died for us. I dont. Hes the epitome of abhorrent. And it would take a train load of psychiatrists to figure out what makes his supporters tick. It surely is nothing good.
