Partially because a substantial number of people didn't have guns in their homes.

I was six when Brenda Miller killed those little kids on a grade school playground. I never had to worry I would get shot after that, until I graduated from Uni.

The only local murders were Edgar Smith in 1957 (beat a 15 yo to death with a bat) and 1965 (plane pilot shot his wife and two toddlers).

Many people plan their vacations around deer hunting season. Some businesses close completely because most of their employees want time off and many others that cater to hunters have extended hours and work all weekend.

It was something that multiple generations enjoy, and for many younger teenagers, getting invited to go with the adults for deer camp was a rite of passage. Also, not at all uncommon for a youngster to get a .22 rifle as a birthday or Christmas gift.

Hunting has significant economic benefits to our state as well.

This was 50+ years ago. A guy shot a rival in the head in the middle of a class session. It was gang related, or racial, as were most all the attacks in our school and the communities around us. This was in the late ’60s, early ’70s. Rare occurrences, even then. This was in a suburb of Los Angeles, in the South Bay.

The biggest "school shooting" I recall was the University of Texas Tower in 1966, and it didn't register so much as a school shooting as it did the incident which made all our lives seem forfeit to any maniac with a gun and a grudge. Coming so soon after JFK's murder, it left an indelible mark on my 12 year old mind.

More recent data still has the number in the high 30s- low 40s, so approximately 10% less households have guns that 60 years ago.

I'm curious to see what attitudes played into the huge swings between high gun ownership and lower rates.
