(13,672 posts)WaPo published an article this morning quoting his aunt as saying he had a troubled home life and never got the help he needed. His parents divorced and evidently his father had custody.

(22,456 posts)...it was the first thing that struck me.
And before I get blasted;
I will not give up my empathy for children whose own pain and confusion leads them to do horrible, horrible things, and no I don't forgive anyone who doesn't show true remorse for doing those horrible things either.

(115,362 posts)The aunt might have reason to say things that can't be validated (or not) but a teacher? I suspect a lot is going to come out.
I'm no bleeding heart on these horrific incidents, but I really regret that the prosecutor came out within hours to say they would try him as an adult. My kneejerk reaction on these things might agree, but I think they would be well served to find the facts before making that conclusion--or any other.

(886 posts)be charged with these murders. Per what I am hearing and reading, the father did NOTHING to help a child who needed help dealing with depression and did NOT secure the guns in the house after a visit from the FBI.

WINDER, Ga. (AP) The father of the teenager accused of opening fire at a Georgia high school, killing four people and wounding nine, was arrested on various charges including second-degree murder, authorities said Thursday.
Colin Gray, 54, the father of Colt Gray, was charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to children, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a social media post.
These charges stem from Mr. Gray knowingly allowing his son, Colt, to possess a weapon, GBI Director Chris Hosey said at an evening news conference. His charges are directly connected with the actions of his son and allowing him to possess a weapon.
In Georgia, second-degree murder means that a person has caused the death of another person while committing second-degree cruelty to children, regardless of intent. It is punishable by 10 to 30 years in prison, while malice murder and felony murder carry a minimum sentence of life. Involuntary manslaughter means that someone unintentionally causes the death of another person.

(1,811 posts)There should be a mechanism where teachers and others can report these kids so they can be removed from bad situations and get treatment. For life, if necessary. Parents should be charged for giving this kind of life to children. Yes, it's intrusive. Yes, it goes against our principles, but how many more dead are we going to take before we change things?
Also, guns need to go. There is no reason any citizen should have assault weapons, nor any ammo meant to go through Kevlar, and similar things. There is no reason for our citizens to be armed like an army. None. Nothing they can get is going to beat the military if they were ever to go against us. All they can go is go on killing sprees, defy the government to stop them. It's wrong.

(17,802 posts)The prosecutors are faced with the option of a minor being released at 18 or an adult locked up for 50 years.
There should be a middle ground.
The last thing we want is an unrepentent like kyle rittenhouse released in less than 4 years, without any treatment.
Yet, that is what would happen as a minor.

The system and adults who made it possible for a fourteen year old to get his hand on a serious handgun should be on trial here, too. The lack of mental health facilities and treatment programs while building more prisons and jails needs to be put on trial.
I've read that for 80% of the US' mentally ill, the first psychological treatment they get is in a police/jail/prison setting. And police COMMONLY shoot and kill mentally ill who call police for help on the streets and in their own homes.
Malaise, how do you and I know 14 is too young to sign contracts, rent apartments, drive, smoke, drink, get married, initiate lawsuits, etc means they are too young for life sentences (a chicken shit form of the death penalty) - when other adults think a life sentence for a child is a swell idea and make hair jokes about it?

No 14 old, let alone one with mental health issues, should be tried as an adult.

Now his father is charged too. Killing innocent people is not the solution.
