(4,987 posts)I actually believe this will actually change some minds.
I now think Shrub will do the same. I am especially hoping Laura Bush endorses Harris as well. I think she would influence some older Republican women.

(5,545 posts)Republicans were going to have a brokered convention to choose another candidate but, because Trump was so wildly popular with the 80% of their base who are authoritarians, they realized that they could not win without him. So they put party over country and chose a Strong Leader who was not committed to democracy as their candidate. From the start there were some Republican politicians who didn't support Trump, mostly they were those who could afford to tank their political careers.
Unfortunately, through Trump's buffoonish mismanagement, overt corruption, and bottom-line centered management of the worst pandemic in a century, his approval with Republicans stayed about 80%. After the (bungled) first coup attempt in US history his approval dropped for a while. But when he wasn't personally held to account his approval rate gradually returned to its previous level.
For a democracy to be functional there have to be at least two viable parties committed to democracy. The US is one party shy of a democracy. Unless and until the Republicans can wrench their party out of the control of the 80% of Republicans who are authoritarians, or OK with authoritarianism as long as they are in control, or can develop a viable new party committed to democracy, democracy in the US will be one election away from failure.

Who could possibly have imagined a problem like that--other than anyone with a few functioning brain cells.
Seems like the usual R default mode. In this case, Unitary Executive for me but not for thee. Just like Law and order for thee but not for me and government handouts for me but not for thee.
That old one: I never expected the leopards to eat my face, sobbed the woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People's Faces Party comes to mind. Rs don't like to face the consequences of the policies that are designed to help them and hurt others.
Editing to add that the Unitary Executive theory is awful and hope I didn't sound as if I was supporting it for Darth Cheney.
slightlv
(7,943 posts)and I agree, the Unitary Executive theory is truly awful and undemocratic. Cheney, Rumsfeld, Feith, and others have been working to make it happen since I was at least a teenager. He really wanted Bush to be the first in the line for Proof of Idea (that would make him the power behind the throne, IMO). But I will give Cheney points for coming right out and saying T should never be anywhere near an office of power ever again. It's a low bar we're giving them for standing up for democracy, but that's all we can expect from
R's at this point. Too many of them have been brainwashed since childhood... a lot of them, thanks to the likes of Cheney and Rumsfeld.

In my book, Dick Cheney was/is worse that W. Bush and Reagan.
