First time ever. This is way outside my comfort zone but I feel the need to DO SOMETHING.
Wish me luck.

(19,382 posts)Frightening then knocking on a door that is a democratic household only to find out they are new MAGA owners. Ive experienced this and its not fun especially if they are nasty.

And , yes, not in mailboxes.
A GOOD canvassing captain will advise you on these things.
A BAD captain (or just inexperienced) will just hand you a list of addresses.

(1,750 posts)Margin in Jacksonville has to increase. Miami-Dade has really fallen off the cliff. There was a time that did it. Not anymore.

(34,067 posts)I also don't stop at homes with 2A stuff.
I'm in Texas. I've never been threatened. I've had doors slammed in my face..LOL I've had a few rants, but I just say "Thank for your time" and leave.
I do wear a campaign tee shirt though.

(40,876 posts)It made for a great ice breaker. "Hi. I'm out enjoying the gorgeous weather & trying to drum up votes for John Kerry. Do you have a three minutes?" I agree with the poster above, don't argue with assholes. I encountered a few, even in my blue area & I'd say, "I'm not here to debate issues, I'm here to get out the vote. Thank you." And then I'd leave. For the nice people I'd end with, "Your vote is your voice. Use it!"
Overall, most people were receptive. I canvassed again in 2008 & 2016. The mood in 2008 was incredibly positive, plus the dem convention was in Denver that year so our whole area was super charged.
Remember, people are SICK OF TRUMP. His hard core cult is not what it used to be. Also, we have the energy & vibe on our side! It makes a difference! And now you're part of it!

(34,067 posts)High will be around 93 today where I live, but it's considered a "cold front" because it got in the 60's last night.

(40,876 posts)Even better than writing post cards which I did in 2020. Canvassing is more effective, too, I think since you're neighbors. Phone banking is also very effective, but everything we all do helps!
Be safe & have fun!

(84 posts)This is one of the hardest jobs to do in support of democracy. Thanks so much for your efforts! Will be interested to hear your experiences from the day's work!

(93,464 posts)this was in a very blue area in california so we usually don't see these things as the state is easily going to vote democratic. You will see them at things like fairs to raise money but this was just out in some random street.
So I'm hoping it is a sign of the enthusiasm that is across the country and people wanting to do this even if they don't"have to".

I don't canvass, I don't think i'm good at it. But I am working the election, have registered voters, been a poll greeter, etc.

(9,533 posts)The actual canvassing experience is anti-climactic more often than not. If you canvass frequently you will encounter a small number of loud and rude people. Don't let them win. You can be the "bigger person." Don't stick around for abuse- disengage immediately and politely.
Person-to-person contact is the most effective Get Out The Vote tool we have.

(11,875 posts)In canvassing, you are almost always given a list of addresses of known registered Democrats. You are just reminding them where and when to vote. You are not going to doors of registered Republicans or Independents.
However, what can sometimes happens is that you go to a mixed household.
For example:
Me: Hello, sir, my name is John is Debra Smith home?
Man: Im her husband. What do you want?
Me: Im just here to share some political information with her. Is she home?
Man: (angrily screaming) Debra, its one of your damn liberals at the door.
Or
Man: (slamming the door) We dont want your Communist $hit here.
Canvassing can be fun.
