The last three Democratic presidents won by margins that would be considered big in today's political climate. However, the media, Republicans, and much of the public expected them to govern from the political center and embrace bipartisanship. Each of these presidents made efforts to do so but were still met with hostility and vitriol from Republicans, often with the media playing along. On the other hand, the last two Republican presidents won by razor-thin margins and lost the popular vote, yet both governed from the far right as though they had broad mandates.

This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
