As I posted myself, the tater thing makes me scream. And the NYT should be ashamed.

the NYT article really didn't. What the author, Peter Baker, actually said about this particular serving of word salad was this:

What he seemed to be saying was that he would raise so much money by imposing tariffs on imported goods that the country could use the proceeds to pay for child care. In itself, that would be a disputable policy assumption.

But the failure to articulate the point, or any point, in a clear way left many in the room scratching their heads, including the questioner, and the response was eventually seen by millions on social media. It was, fair to say, an answer that did not age well.

LOD was absolutely correct in calling this paragraph sanewashing. But Baker didn't characterize tariffs as a tax paid by a foreign country as LOD claimed. He did note many instances of Trump's weirdness and incoherence, probably for the first time in the NYT. The whole article is here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/09/us/politics/debate-trump-age-capacity.html?unlocked_article_code=1.Jk4.3MxC.EKlcnmT0rJ69&smid=url-share

10. You're not being fair in defending Baker. Baker failed to call it a TAX ON AMERICANS, and made shit up.

As O'Donnell correctly pointed out, Trump never even articulated a policy, let alone a "disputable policy assumption." Trump never even said he would use the "proceeds," i.e. tariff taxes collected from consumers, "to pay for childcare." BAKER said that. Baker articulated Trump’s policy for him, where Trump was unable to do so in his word salad nonsense. THAT is sanewashing.

And I think Baker was wrong in thinking that was what Trump meant to say. I honestly don't think Trump meant that our government would pay for childcare. Like Trump's bloviating about how drilling for more oil will somehow magically bring food costs down to pre-pandemic levels, Trump has no actual policy he intends to implement.

What Trump actually said, to the extent he said anything discernable, is that foreign governments will pay for our childcare, like he said Mexico will pay for the wall. That is insane, of course, and Baker failed to tell his readers the true level of Trump’s derangement.

Baker deserved every bit of whoopass he got from O'Donnell, and then some.

Fuck the NYT. . . It's so refreshing to see someone trash them who might have some influence.

7. Why is it hard for someone to say clearly that foreign countries don't pay us tariff fees....

importers do and they pass that expense on to consumers through raised prices, which therefore cause inflation to inch up.
