I meant to say, are you going to feed the dogs but instead what came out was “are you going to cook the dogs?”

Potato looked absolutely desolate. He sighed audibly, plopped down on the ground in a dramatic fashion and put his head on his paws. There’s no way in heaven that dog didn’t understand what I said. I had to apologize to him and say I didn’t mean it, and I was so sorry.

Potato was not a particularly intelligent dog. Named this because that’s just what he looked like, Potato was a brown rescue pitbull who’d been dumped over a fence in Waianae. Every day of his life that he lived with us, when it was time to open the door, he would go to the interior corner with the hinges on it as if he’d never seen that door open. Every day. In spite of his enduring bafflement at the magic of doors, he very clearly understood what I said about cooking the dogs.

He did forgive me. Dogs understand more than we think.
