Where Trump's "execute the babies" lie comes from

Treating newborn infants with serious life-threatening conditions is a specialized branch of medicine. Perinatal palliative care is a strategy that includes “options for obstetric and newborn care” that focus on “maximizing quality of life and comfort for newborns with a variety of conditions considered to be life-limiting in early infancy.” This is NOT after birth abortion.

https://www.salon.com/2024/09/11/where-trumps-execute-the-babies-lie-comes-from/

It’s estimated that less than 1% of abortions in the U.S. occur after 21 weeks of gestation. The reasons pregnant people might seek abortion care after 21 weeks is generally due to severe medical complications — such as the fetus having a fatal anomaly. In fact, when Trump is suggesting that Democrats want to “execute” babies after birth, he is referring to perinatal palliative care. .....

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), perinatal palliative care is a strategy that includes “options for obstetric and newborn care” that focus on “maximizing quality of life and comfort for newborns with a variety of conditions considered to be life-limiting in early infancy.”

The priority in perinatal palliative care in a situation where a newborn is born with a life-limiting condition is to both ease patient suffering and honor values. What this looks like will vary depending on the life-limiting condition. Dr. Stacy Seyb, an Idaho-based maternal-fetal medicine specialist, told Salon in July that for some lethal anomalies, like holoprosencephaly, it could be keeping the patient warm, allowing them to be with their parents, and keeping them comfortable. .....

The idea that infants are being born in the third trimester of pregnancy and being aborted after birth is a “scare tactic” and “an insult to the medical profession,” Seyb said.

But as ACOG states: “At no point in the course of delivering a newborn with life-limiting conditions and subsequently providing palliative care does the obstetrician–gynecologist end the life of the newborn receiving palliative care.”

David Hackney, a Cleveland-based maternal-fetal medicine specialist, told Salon, “perinatal comfort care” often gets conflated with “abortion,” and "euthanasia.” But as ACOG emphasizes, “abortion cannot be performed after a pregnancy has ended.”

I remember that when we decided to put my father-in-law into a hospice, we met with palliative care specialists who were there to help my mother-in-law deal with the end-of-life issues. I understood the concept of palliative care and had to explain these concepts to my mother-in-law. This was not a fun job. The same concepts apply to babies born with severe medical conditions.

The claims of after birth abortions are truly offensive and are wrong. I was glad that TFG was fact checked during the debate.

My brother's wife gave birth to a 22 week premature baby. Among multiple other issues the baby had no stomach.
The doctors said that they might, with multiple operations, over time allow the child to live but no real knowledge
of for how long or at what quality of life. They with consulting with their priest allowed the baby to have palliative care only.
This is exactly the kind of case donny has puffed up to his lie about execution of babies. He is sick. But you all knew that already.

not consistent with life beyond minutes, hours, or days... can only be offered compassionate, pain-free care (and not as I assume they believe, a BRAIN transplant or other ridiculous notion). There are many conditions like this incompatible with life for which palliative care is all that can be offered. If a baby is born with minimal to no stomach, intestines, and colon--i.e., has no digestive system, of course, one can give parenteral (intravenous) medication, fluids, and some nutrition, but that is never going to be more than very temporary.

But, given their unbelievable level of ignorance about female bodies, cycles, and reproduction, I wish I could say I am surprised. Even some of their RW PHYSICIAN Congressmen are almost equally ignorant. (And Ronnie Jackson is not even the worst).

8. This is a common claim by right wing extremists

It's unusual to me that this wouldn't be known to the typical Democrat of Progressive. I hate this discussion because it requires medical and scientific talk that makes many uncomfortable. This isn't about babies born with severe medical conditions; its about the rare instances of "late term" abortion. The evangelical and extremist crowd have always described these procedures as being "murder" or whatnot. Its common for them to pretend this situation is common, when its extremely rare, and then base their wholesale objection to abortion based upon this rare situation. They then try to portray anyone in favor or a woman's right to choose as being in favor of "killing babies" when, again, their objection is based upon a rare procedure that is only undertaken for the life/health of the mother.

it’s not just a dirty lie, it’s twisting something they can barely comprehend.
that level of compassion and care is lost on them.

and now they’re making more and more women carry these babies to term. many women will, to have those few moments/days. but it’s as cruel as it gets to force that on families.

10. Infant mortality in Texas has risen 13% since abortion ban
Thu Sep 12, 2024, 01:30 PM
Sep 2024

There are more babies being born in Texas with severe birth defects who are not capable of surviving which has caused the rate of infant mortality to increase. Due to the Texas abortion ban, Texas has a large number of babies die in what TFG would call post birth abortions. These infants are receiving care but they were never viable and would have normally been aborted earlier.

🚨Texas was one of the first states to outlaw abortion, thanks to a trigger law prohibiting abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detectable (at approximately five to six weeks).

Nearly three years later, a study published by the journal JAMA Pediatrics has revealed the impact of the Texas law, which came into effect almost a year before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022.

Between 2021 and 2022, infant deaths in Texas increased from 1,985 to 2,240, an increase of 12.9%, while the rest of the United States saw a rise of only 1.8%.

Texas was one of the first states to outlaw abortion, thanks to a trigger law prohibiting abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detectable (at approximately five to six weeks).

The statistics also noted that neonatal deaths due to congenital anomalies rose 22.9% in Texas, but declined 3.1% nationally. “This is pointing to a causal effect of the policy; we didn’t see this increase in infant deaths in other states,” lead author Alison Gemmill, assistant professor of population, family, and reproductive Health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, told NBC News. “This might foreshadow what is happening in other states [...] Texas is basically a year ahead,” she added, explaining that the other U.S. states that banned abortion after the Supreme Court ruling could see a similar spike in infant mortality.

“I think these findings make clear the potentially devastating consequences that abortion bans can have,” said co-author Suzanne Bell, a fertility researcher.

Physicians have argued that the law is too restrictive for women facing pregnancy complications. Neonatal deaths are relatively rare, and the researchers were surprised by the results. While the study does not break down the numbers by race or socioeconomic groups, abortion bans are known to primarily affect vulnerable populations such as low-income families, African Americans, and the Latino community.

If you buy TFG's definition of a post-birth abortion, Texas and other red states with abortion bans are committing this offense.

Ralph Northam, who is also an MD, was recorded discussing the palliative care of dying newborns, and the GOP, being the shitheads they are, distorted what he said, and used it against him and his party. And, Trump eventually latched onto it, which is where this shit originated.
