Pre-Employment credit checks, and unemployment discrimination.

Picture this scenario,

You lost your job, due to outsourcing, restructuring, or layoffs.

You burned through your savings trying to make ends meet while you search for work, but a bad economy and competition from hundreds if not thousands of other unemployed workers have made your job hunt last longer than 6 months with no end in sight.

But the bills, the bills don't stop coming, and while you do your best to cut down on things you use, that mortgage payment amount you owe becomes hard to reach and despite your best efforts, you fall behind.

Bill after bill, late fee after late fee takes its toll, and over time, your credit is ruined.

But that's okay right? The economy is picking up again, jobs are being added but for some reason every place you apply to never calls back.

To many Americans this is an all too familiar scenario that many are living in as I write.

The sad fact is that there are already two strikes against this person, the discrimination the long term unemployed face (people who have been unemployed for longer than 6 months), and a bad credit report.

Not to mention the fact that are still roughly 15 million Americans that are jobless, and many more working part time but are looking for full time work.

So three strikes.

Been on that fucking treadmill since 2001. And consequently, I gave up and have nothing of value and work at odd jobs to get by... that's all there is anymore, especially if you're over forty. And at that point, sixty five is a long ass way down a long, hard road.

I'm nearing 45, lousy credit from being dirt poor for years, and I've been out of the job market taking care of Gram for over 4 years now.

I'm freaking scared to death about trying to re-enter the job market after she passes.

If you've been out of the loop for anything more than six months, it will be very difficult if possible at all to get anything where your skill sets are of value.

I was working as a cook, mind you I'm qualified to run a government agency and then some, and I hurt my back at work last summer. I never even got an ex-ray or MRI... only some charlatan with a pizza cutter thing that he rolled up and down my arms and legs. I had to get an attorney and THEY told me this week that all the worker's comp assholes are interested in is an old condition with my shoulder, which was also bothering me at the time and they are not going to be willing to have anything to do with any damage to spinal discs because I'm getting old!! So they are willing to give me $5K (minus attorney fees) to walk away even though I have not been able to return to work nor can I do anything I used to do before this all happened. And I used to cycle several miles a day, several days a week and ski 20K in a few hours in the winter, now I can't handle getting my laundry done in one day. And since I'm only in my mid-late fifties, I'm screwed. It seems that all they are interested in is making sure that nobody finds out what is wrong and that they don't end up paying for any treatment/PT or lost wages. Had they done something last summer, I could at least be working at some tourist job around town and at least know that I was able to keep my rent paid for this two room cabin I dwell in. It's a toss up every month now. I've already been homeless twice and I don't think I can deal with that again.

I wish you good fortune in finding something when the time comes for you to be looking again. And it's a good thing that you are doing, taking care of a loved one as you are. I hope the powers that be will reward you for your kindness in a good way.

Mom got sick, needed surgery, then I got laid-off. Haven't found anything yet...and only one interview!

I'm also terrified at the prospect of interviewing after all this time!

Just know that you are not alone!! If you ever need to vent or a shoulder to cry on, send me an email...I'm here.

Sending you good vibes and hugs!
