Right-to-work legislation in Michigan: Thousands could mass for rallies at Capitol - Numbers needed!

Right-to-work legislation in Michigan: Thousands could mass for rallies at Capitol
By Paul Egan
Detroit Free Press Lansing Bureau

LANSING -- Unions spent Friday organizing civil disobedience training and staffing phone banks to urge members to be at the Capitol on Tuesday for what could be one of the largest demonstrations the state's seat of government has seen in decades.

Backers and opponents of a right-to-work law in Michigan said they are planning to show their strength -- predictions of 7,000 demonstrators or more, including hundreds from other states -- as the Legislature prepares to complete its fast-track consideration of a package of bills that would make the lightning-rod issue the law.

Gov. Rick Snyder already has said he will sign the bills when they hit his desk, possibly Tuesday.

What happens in Michigan, considered the birthplace of the American organized labor movement, is being watched across the country and could prove to be a litmus test of sorts for unions and their once Teflon influence.

"On a scale of one to 10, this is an 11," said former U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer, now business development representative with the Michigan Laborers-Employers Cooperation and Education Trust.

"This is a direct affront to organized labor and its members. It's a game-changer."

I hope everyone blasts this out all over the country/world: Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, forwards, blogs, texts, cell phone, land line. Heck, I hope our Canadian friends can come down and join in in Lansing on Tuesday too!!!!! Folks from IN, IL, OH, MN, WI, NY. Bring buses, vans, cars. Come on the train or fly in. Just get there and make a stand against the Koch Bros!!!

even a HUGE one day demonstration, won't do much to change things. This law has passed and will be signed by the Republican governor. It's almost inevitable because of the make-up of the state houses and the governor's affiliation. It's a lot like the situation in Wisconsin in which a close to revolutionary fervor was diverted into electoral politics resulting in a defeat for the working class.

This time we should at the least TRY something different. This should be a militant occupation of the state capital and a call for a statewide general strike until this bill is vetoed.
