Life is cheap in Russia human wave assaults as in WW-1 and WW2.
Russia where everything is shit except piss.
1985 drinking beer at a pub in Butzbach at that time West Germany and a friend i made who then I was 19 in age. And he would speak of East front not all the time yet sometimes i would never ask him.
And he told me as young soldier seeing in the distance a dark mass of Russian soldiers coming in waves and their MG-42 teams would open up on these waves of soldiers then I would think sitting there listening to him talk perhaps after radio messages were sent perhaps next indirect the arty or mortars maybe they were lucky and had tac air stukas.
How fucking frightening with him telling me this story over bottles of Licher beer I as young infantry soldier that made my skin crawl.
What can you say to youre friend who is drunk and just told you a war memory a nice fellow who overtime we became close friends and he would invite me to his home to have dinner with his wife and their family.
Now same thing again history rinse and repeat sitting having coffee reading of human wave assaults today in Ukraine i thought of Joseph and him telling me his memories.
We can only hope Putin and Shoigu soon find themselves at end of a rope or maybe a Grach round behind an ear for causing Misery rape torture of Ukrainian civilians.
Personally Im hopeful they get the rope.

(38,054 posts)Private Clubs in Wiesbaden when he was stationed there a third time - but with his young family. I was born there. Elite Soldiers from WW 2 (read between the lines) invited a well liked Green Beret who was black, and his wife (white) to join their little beer and schnitzel drinking club. Recommended by Mrs. Ninna (Stauffenberg). My mother was a distant cousin of hers. Another Von family name.
As if my dad had not been brainwashed enough in that first class of Green Berets . . . they really put the fear of the devil in him with their stories of the 'Russian soldier'.
In 1977 - the terrorist attacks in West Germany were coming every 3 to 4 days from the East. This is the club that gave us our German Shepherd Duke.
They *knew* things Duncan. So many had to atone for their hate after WW 2 - that they saw my brother and me as humans . . . but knew the Russians did not.
When General Clarke dies I will write the book about the Green Berets that I have from 6 tapes from my dad in 2004. The former Panzer and SS officers were our friends and protectors in Wiesbaden in the 1970's.
They knew the cruelty of the Russian soldier on the front.
I wish more folks who were stationed in Germany before the wall came down would share their interactions as you have.
PS - I've posted it before and I will post it again - I didn't know white folks in their 50's 60's and beyond could be cruel to little black kids until we moved to Rochester NY in 1978. Another post for another day -but when you are punished and must atone for racism, genocide, hatred of Jewish Human Beings and sick cruelty . . . it changes you. We've never had that kind of reckoning in America - and it shows.

(15,651 posts)We had Duty protection the housing area my rifle platoon fortunately nothing ever happened to the dependents and nothing ever happened where we were in danger.
The most dangerous time in West Germany is when a lot of us in battalion got dysentery from spaghetti out mess hall. 😁And you know as i Army mess-halls are clean.
