(8,256 posts)haven't come up before in politics and especially the WH, such as
...if a president commits a crime while in office can he be prosecuted?
...what are the boundaries for immunity while in office and afterward? If a president does it, is it legal?
...if a president takes a bribe or makes money off of his/her position is it illegal? Are we ignoring the emoluments clause now?
...is assaulting a women with your hand rape, sexual assault, or never happened?
...is blackmailing a foreign leader by withholding assistance unless he finds dirt on your opponent legal, illegal, worthy of impeachment, or 'perfect'?
...can a candidate promise favorable treatment for industry leaders in exchange for 1 billion in campaign contributions?
...can a president interfere with the processes of elections as long as he does it from the oval office?
...is political lying fair game if it justifies a win?
...is it fair game to enlist the help of foreign countries to help catapult the propaganda?
...Ok for president's children to get favors from foreign countries that otherwise wouldn't happen?
...what does it mean when a president meets with a foreign adversary with no other american observer?
Why do we have to endure many prosecutions, investigations, every level of court interventions, analysis...just because one malignant narcissist is given power and decides he can do anything he wants?
The above is a partial list

(2,935 posts)...the law of the land so that some future President can't do the same damage that was done by Trump and his cronies. We discovered that too much of our system is based on the assumption that our representatives--particularly those in the Executive Branch--will generally act in good faith. Nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to Donald Trump and company--furthermore, we found out (the hard way) that it's also not true for about a third of the electorate who are unrepentant MAGA chuds.
We did have some early warnings: Nixon, Iran-Contra, Iraq-gate, and any number of lesser scandals. The problem is that we never prosecuted those cases to the fullest extent of the law, and no one really even got punished outside of a few "limited hangout" bad actors. And even most of those bad actors--like Ollie North--got pardoned anyway. For things to change, there have to be real consequences for crimes committed. They can't just keep getting away with it.

(2,937 posts)which is now set up to support any sort of nonsense the next Donnie chooses to perpetrate. We have to gain the house and Senate as well as WH and fix that! Also the EC, which overrules the popular vote. One person, one vote, the one with the most votes wins, period.

(3,094 posts)As a country, it has been too easy to ignore the injustice built into our legal system and the overall running of our society.
I'm not a person who believes that trope about how "everything happens for a reason", but as you have pointed out, the wealthy and powerful have been given a pass for their assaults on our legal system and our ideals for how our system should be run.
Basically, if you have enough money to hire a bunch of lawyers, then you can get away with almost anything. And the uneducated rubes will support the rich because doing that supports their multitude of bigotries.
Too many people are ignorant of the real history of our country, so they are not equipped to fight back against injustice.
In other words, we are being forced to acknowledge the rot in our legal and economic systems and are called upon to do the actual hard, dirty, and miserable work of fixing it.
The return of the hatefulness and cruelty of the Confederacy has ripped the concealing cover off and revealed the ugly reality.

(86,708 posts)Ordinarily itd be good advice - to stop talking about him. But when hes out there every day, sucking oxygen out of the room, OR there are hoards of fans, news people, people who loathe him and say so out loud, editorialists - on BOTH sides, and nonstop visuals all over TV, we cant just stay silent. Not even out of protest.
We HAVE TO speak up. We HAVE TO push back. We HAVE TO remain vigilant. We HAVE TO be as ever-present as they are. If theres no response, THAT send a message, too. Usually the wrong message.
