Is anyone else embarrassed today?

Last edited Sun Sep 15, 2024, 11:01 PM - Edit history (1)

or is it just me

ETA> for those who have missed most of the posts on DU today, I am referring to how quickly many have latched onto or added to conspiracy theories about the apparent attempt to assassinate Trump today. Not to mention a blase attitude that some political assassinations may be tolerable.

"Why we have this rule: Democrats are supposed to be part of the "reality-based community." Some amount of skepticism toward powerful institutions is healthy and appropriate, but that doesn't mean every paranoid fantasy is true. Posts about mass shootings being "false flag" operations, 9/11 being a controlled demolition, no airplane at the Pentagon, chemtrails, black helicopters, the Illuminati, or other nonsense make us all look like fools. This website may have the word "underground" in our name, but we are not extreme fringe."

And how we stay a "reality-based community" is that we form our opinions based on verified facts and not on what conveniently fits our world view.

“The power of an open question” where did I hear that before?

I’ve had an OP deleted due to a CT.
Unfortunately, it can’t be proven right until documents are de-classified in 25 years.
Live long enough and read history, you find that some conspiracies were indeed true, such as sabotaging peace talks for political points, faked attacks on ships and so on.

Not defending any of this. I backed off speculation, because the shit going down and the speculation on it are all distraction. Intentional distraction.

I posted this Friday, and it got zero rec’s and replies.

This is a man who has incited violence in order to overturn an election, who has done everything in his power to stoke the fires, and who feels absolutely no remorse in using stochastic violence for his own end. The only reason that he is running again for president is so that he can skip out of multiple fraud, rape, and treason charges and the only reason he has a hope in hell of winning is because he's promising every billionaire out there the keys to the kingdom if he wins, promises that he has no more intent to keep than any other promise he's made.

I do not believe in assassination. It indicates the breakdown of democracy and the rule of law. Having said that, if someone succeeds in taking him out, I won't lose a lot of sleep.

I take no joy in that.
I realize that all the whackjobs out there aren't RW whackjobs...
all the lone-wolves aren't necessarily MAGAs.
Since we don't seem to be able to keep military-grade weapons out of the hands of the whackjobs, should we just accept that there will be attempts on all the candidates?
Should we...in trump's own words..."just get over it"?

if Trump had been killed today, 37% of Americans would be crazed and dangerous for the rest of their lives. Better that they see their hero age out and die of old age. There is enough violence in the USA. A dead candidate would be horrific.

So much hate is promoted, and I'm very disappointed that our side is participating in it. We are expected to be better. There is no world where promoting hated and hyperbole is acceptable, let alone shooting at people. I'm disappointed at the mood surrounding all of this. It's not Ok just because the target was Trump.
