MI-10: Democratic group puts $1.7M behind ad boosting Marlinga over James

A national Democratic group said it's spending $1.74 million to broadcast a new TV ad to boost the Democratic challenger to freshman Republican U.S. Rep. John James in the Detroit market over the next two weeks.

The investment by the House Majority PAC, which is aligned with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, is a signal that House Democrats are feeling more bullish about their nominee's prospects in suburban Detroit's 10th Congressional District than in the 2022 matchup between Marlinga and James. The 10th District covers southern Macomb County and Rochester and Rochester Hills in Oakland County.

National Democrats took heat in 2022 for not spending anything to help Democrat Carl Marlinga after he came within 1,600 votes, a half of a percentage point, of defeating the well-funded James in what ranked among the closest U.S. House races nationally. Marlinga, who struggles with fundraising, only spent $1 million two years ago to James' $6 million.

Now, James and Marlinga are set for a rematch in the Nov. 5 election, and Democratic groups this time appear ready to engage, with House Majority PAC having reserved about $3.7 million in airtime for the race this fall, and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee with $1.7 million in reservations, according to ad-tracking data.
