New Maine polls shows Harris leading Trump in race for president

An independent poll of likely Maine voters released Wednesday shows Vice President Kamala Harris leading former President Donald Trump 50-41%.

Portland-based Pan Atlantic Research released its 64th Omnibus Poll, which surveyed 875 Mainers between Sept. 5 and Sept. 15. The margin of error is 3.5 percentage points.

The pollsters note that the results show public opinion at a certain point in time and “do not seek to project final election results.”

Digging deeper into the results for the Harris v. Trump matchup, the results show Harris ahead of Trump 58% to 32% in the southern and more liberal 1st Congressional District and Trump ahead of Harris in the more rural and conservative 2nd Congressional District, 49-42%.

Beginning in 1820, when Maine split off from Massachusetts to become the nation’s 23rd state, through this day in 1958, Maine held its elections for statewide and congressional offices in September, reflecting its frigid winters and early harvest season.

From Civil War times to the Great Depression, Maine voters reliably sent Republicans to Congress while also backing GOP presidential hopefuls. Maine’s reputation as a bellwether for presidential elections gave rise to the once popular political slogan, “As Maine goes, so goes the nation.”

That trend came to a spectacular halt in 1936 when Alf Landon, the Republican nominee, carried only Maine and Vermont in his contest with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The results led James Farley, FDR’s campaign manager, to quip: “As Maine goes, so goes Vermont.”'
