General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe latest Covid Vaccinations are available and I have a question.
We previously got all our Covid shots and boosters at CVS Pharmacies and they were all Moderna. Currently, CVS is only offering Pfizer, except for one or two inconvenient locations offering Moderna.
I have researched this issue and found both are "new" vaccines and not boosters. Both work the same way, have the same side effects, efficacy, and target the latest K-2 variant (why they named it after the second highest mountain on Earth is a question for another day).
We would appreciate any information to help us determine if we should stick with Moderna or get Pfizer this time. In other words, can we "mix and match?"

(28,836 posts)My partner is a pharmacist, and she says that either is fine.
Also, Yale, the CDC, and the FDA say the same thing:

(54,330 posts)I decided to stick with it. My biggest gripe is finding them. We normally go to Walgreens since they bought out all the other small pharmacies in the area and they weren't offering Moderna locally. My husband had to go north for something, so he got his about 20 miles away. I finally located a nearby Rite Aid to get one. I haven't heard any feedback from the current Pfizer vaccine but had heard of people having a few problems with the previous ones. My opinion would be that a booster of whatever you can get is better than no booster at all. As far as I know, mix and match is okay.

(12,855 posts)I got mine last week with a flu shot at the University clinic. Lots of people waiting for shots. They told me Covid was running rampant on campus because the students will not get vaccinated.
I was pretty tired and had a headache, body aches for two days. Husband had fewer side effects. Worth it to not end up hospitalized with Covid!

(6,094 posts)All my shots have been Pfizer.
Added: Never had any reactions. The only reactions I've had were from the shingles shots.

(791 posts)I recall some studies that showed mixing the vaccines improved immune response. Not sure if that still holds true.

(43,265 posts)and all they had was the Pfizer vaccine. We have every shot up to now and they were all Moderna. They reassured us that this vaccine is the same as the Moderna. So we got the Pfizer COVID vaccine in our right arms, along with the senior flu shot in the left arm. 27 hours later and no side effects.

(182,047 posts)My oldest child was in the original Pfizer trial and got his vaccination in August of 2020. My oldest has recommended the Moderna shot because Moderna has a higher dose of active ingredient. My youngest has had reactions to the Moderna and is now taking the Pfizer.
Either vaccine appears to be equally effective It is really your choice
