I'm not naive enough to think it would have fixed the south but it certainly would have been a great benefit to the former slaves.

I would say abandonment of recustruction, Kennedy not being able to stop Vietnam escalation and Carter not being able too see his energy policy through are three setbacks that really changed the course this country could have taken.
