https://www.rawstory.com/maga-boat-parade-economy/A boat owner raised his voice at CNN journalist Elle Reeve for noting that he could afford the expensive hobby despite economic complaints.
The confrontation came while Reeve was covering a so-called MAGA boat parade in Panama City, Florida. The interview was replayed over the weekend.
"What's your most important issue?" Reeve asked the boat owner.
"The economy, getting the interest rates down, getting it to where we can afford to live in America," the man replied. "Right now, it's too expensive."
"Okay, now, let me maybe ask a slightly impolite question, but, you know, if you can afford a boat, you're not hurting so bad, right, because a boat costs a lot of money, and it's a lot of upkeep," Reeve noted.
"Listen, nobody gave me s---!" the man shouted back. "I'm a retired military, retired power plant, and I am successful and retired, with boats, jet skis, because I did it right."
So not only does he own a boat and jet skis but also is retired military and private sector which likely means he is double dipping on Federal Retirement and Social Security. Yeah we bleed for ya, buddy.

(5,913 posts)That was done to disguise the cutting of the top rate to now be lower than the second highest bracket. And many cliffs for next couple of tax years, which will mostly hit lower income folks. I'm angry at our party to not be running on this issue.

But yeah, keep watching Fox, MAGAs, and believing the lies they tell you. Plus point fingers at everything but the obvious - the real problem is the billionaire class. It's always been them.

If they do set foot in that type of athletic environment, they ain't running their mouth or just talk about how they were 30 years ago.

He might have realized how much of an idiot he sounded when she brought up the boat but would have never admitted it. He also seems to think inflation never was an issue until three years ago.

(36,792 posts)Thing is, some military retirees have enough time to get vested in a private sector pension + social security. Not to mention Thrift Savings plans and IRAs and good prescription drug plans and healthcare plans. I don't really begrudge them, they still had to work for it, but it takes a lot of nerve to turn around and complain about the cost of living.

(3,835 posts)My wife is insulin dependent diabetic who takes five injections and a handful of pills every day. I am retired military and I drop to my knees and thank God every month that we have Medicare and the military TriCare for Life with pharmacy benefit and we receive a shipment of insulin. In fact, if I go to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription, I try to pick it up when no one else is at the pharmacy window because I am embarrassed at how little we pay for scripts when other people are asking if they can get only a part of their prescription filled until payday.

(3,835 posts)I live on Virginia waterfront where Potomac joins Chesapeake Bay -- LOTS of retirees, most of them with a LOT of money, all with boats (plural), 95% Republicans, 5% Democrats -- and 95% of the 95% are 100% MAGAt assholes -- I can certainly see one of my neighbors saying the same thing or worse..
We were fortunate to have inherited enough to build a nice -- not regal home -- and live quietly, do a little travel, a lot of volunteering. Our income is two social security, one retired military, one retired high school teacher. We do just fine, however, we don't own a boat (unless my kayak counts), our travel is to visit relatives in TN, AL, MS, son's family in VA, single daughter in DC. And we do watch every penny.
We are in the midst of downsizing, moving into 55-over near children. A neighbor who is one of the 5% decent Republicans made us a cash offer for our house that was very pleasing, so, off we go. He does NOT have a Trump sign, flag, bumper sticker, or decal and says nothing about politics.

A better tactic would have been to point out that interest rates were starting to come back down, that the stock market was at a record level, and yhat inflation had slowed, making the US the strongest economy on the planet right now and why did he want to throw that away on a bad businessman who kept going bankrupt?
Bet the guy would have turned a whole series of funny colors.

(1,358 posts)Double dipping from serving OUR country. Guess what, i have served this country 26 years so far and worked with retired military members who are working, " as your refering as double dipping," another federal agency. Retired military members earned that retirement pay for the number of years they put in and this gentleman continued to work for the people. Guess what, public service people dont earn much in comparison to private citizens. If he is using his, " Double Dip," income, that his right to for serving this country while people like you sit back and talk smack about people with money. Big deal abouts boats, i got three boats, but you know what, i work hard for them. But, i can see this guys point, it is expensive to live off retirement pay; especially in Florida. Economy.... not the real issue, the real issue is buying 1.99 for 20oz water bottle in today retirement allotments.
