One advantage of leggings is that they come in a wider variety of colors and patterns than either women's or men's long john's do. I don't own any myself at the moment, because I live in those sinful, unholy things called pants most of the time.

Know a woman who at over 80 yo had lost 30 # in 3 months due to illness. Her (L) foot had 1+ swelling all the time and both feet were almost black looking. On her visit to her PCP, she wore ankle length leggings - showed her (L) foot to PCP. That day, she had over 3+ swelling, causing great concern. When back home, she removed the leggings, laid down and propped up her leg. Swelling went down immediately. The leggings had cut the flow of her return circulation. A change in her heart medication and her legs now have a normal color and only occasional (L) foot swelling. This was 3 years ago; she has never worn leggings again.
On another note, I gave red long johns to a couple of male friends as a joke Christmas gift. They both work out in the cold of foothill mountains during winter. They both actually liked them, say they wear them and I have one's picture, in a modelling pose, hanging on my 'fridge.
