A menswear fashion expert has no time for former President Donald Trump's new line of watches.
Derek Guy, a menswear expert who has contributed to the Washington Post and Esquire, publicly shamed Trump for shilling a $100,000 watches he described as an obvious scam.
"I don't understand how anyone can do this to their supporters," Guy wrote on X. "They play you as a sucker."

Because like P. T. Barnum said .........there is sucker born every minute..........and this dumb crowd ...........is well dumb.........if he gets in maybe they can sell them after he goes after Social Security and Medicare...................

(40,085 posts)His rubes seem to be getting dumber and dumber. Trump is just taking advantage of them, but that's what he does.

I find this almost insulting.
Snarky watch collectors on Reddit seem to agree with me.

There were a couple of other guests who knew about watches and they said the $499 and $799 watches were junk worth maybe $50 and $80. They also said that the $100,000 watch, if the amount of gold was accurately represented, would be worth about $12,000.
It is all another scam.

(76,742 posts)...most experts on that period say that Barnum didn't actually say that. In fact, it was out of character because Barnum was very respectful toward his customers.
It was actually said by a competitor to disparage Barnum.
Another source credits late 1860s Chicago saloon owner Michael Cassius McDonald as the originator of the aphorism. According to the book Gem of the Prairie: Chicago Underworld (1940) by Herbert Asbury, McDonald was equipping his gambling house known as The Store when his partner expressed concern over the large number of roulette wheels and faro tables being installed and their ability to get enough players. McDonald then allegedly said, "Don't worry about that, there's a sucker born every minute."

(5,358 posts)for those he conned. It's not like they haven't ever heard he is a con artist who takes advantage of others. You don't need to be a genius to understand it's who he is.
It's well documented and reported. It's their hatred of liberals, and their own stubbornness in believing they are right about him. They think they are "better" than us. Too bad it prevents them from seeing the truth, but hey they have the freedom to be dumbass chumps, if they want to be.

(1,052 posts)Tourbillon [translated in French as 'whirlwind'] refers to an old complication (originated by seminal watchmaker Abraham Breget in 1801) that attempted to compensate for the effects of gravity on mechanical watch movements by isolating the mainspring in various positions. They are complicated and also largely irrelevant in terms of accuracy in the modern world. Cheap quartz watches are much more accurate than tourbillon mechanical movements, despite the fact that mechanical movements are more expensive due to their massive complexity.
For a mechanical tourbillon movement to be priced as low as these Trump watches are, it will require a Chinese movement, as the cheapest Swiss tourbillon movement starts at about 20 times the price.

(40,915 posts)Very technical. Very complex.
Can be very expensive.... or maybe not so much.
Improved affordability
Several Chinese manufacturers, like Tianjin Seagull, now produce a variety of tourbillon movements.[20] These movements are bought as ébauches by some manufacturers and are sometimes incorporated into watches that meet the requirements of the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry to be sold as Swiss Made, which requires 60% of the value to have been made in Switzerland.[21] The availability of less expensive tourbillons has led industry spectators to worry that another quartz crisis may occur, where the Swiss watch industry will not be able to adapt quickly to less expensive complicated mechanical watches produced in other countries.[22] In 2016, TAG Heuer began offering the Carrera Heuer-02T tourbillon at a suggested retail price of 14,900 CHF (~US$15,000), significantly lower than the 100,000 CHF or more charged by some other established Swiss watch brands.[23]

(40,915 posts)Prices? You might want to check Ebay for some 'slightly' better prices, not counting the gold and diamonds.

Here is his commercial. I would have doubts that the watch is top quality.

So he could legitimately send somebody a $5 watch for the $100,000 they paid.
Oh and the last line:
These watches are not political and have nothing to do with any political campaign.
In other words, any money you send him for these goes straight into his pocket. Gee, if I were a MAGA cult member, I couldn't wait to send $100,000 to a so called billionaire "because he truly cares about his supporters and loves America".
