He lives in Mills River, outside of Asheville. I'm worried sick.

(61,857 posts)Essentially minor hurricane conditions - power out, loads of trees down. Reminds us of Fran in Raleigh in 1996.

(27,834 posts)I did get a text. He said there's some water in the basement and no power but otherwise they are fine.
All of the reports about the area sound terrifying.
Stay safe!!

(34,295 posts)They were in Perry where the eye came in etc. Afterward, some of them decided to hit the road to Tallahassee. It was blocked by a tree, so they gradually moved it. Someone in the YouTube chat says, "Watch there will be another tree up the road". Sure enough there was, but they were in their Dominator and somehow managed to drive "off road" and around the fallen trees. So, instead of a storm livestream, it became a live stream of guys driving with fallen trees (and a few downed power lines) on the road.
There were alot of fallen trees. I'm pretty sure it was Cat 4 wind in Perry.

(69,364 posts)There's no power, and trees are falling. I told him to stay inside. I hope your nephew is in a safe shelter, away from flooding. If so, he'll be fine.

(27,834 posts)Double digit rain fall. Then the hurricane headed their direction and they could get another 6", along with wind damage.

(7,541 posts)Her mom (in her late 70s) is home dealing with water in the basement (with pumps) and daughter (RN) required to stay at work in private mental hospital. They had a lot of rain before the tropical storm showed up.

(15,107 posts)I've seen Asheville during a regular downpour and it was pretty amazing how fast the roads filled up. I can't even imagine how it is now.
We're just over the mountain from Asheville, in TN. It's pretty bad here too. Roads are flooded. We live on a hill, so unlikely that we'll see flooding in our home.
Our neighbor 2 houses up from us has no power. They get it from the other direction. Usually, they have power when we don't. We've filled the tubs with water in case we lose power, since we have a well that relies on an electric pump.
Horse tucked herself into the barn, which she rarely does during normal rain and storms. Actually, I have never seen her hang out in the barn during any storm at all. She doesn't like the sound of rain on the metal roof. But today is different and she knows it.
News just said a tree fell on someone's porch, trapping them inside. But no one was hurt. This is really some scary stuff. Sure, not as bad as it was in FL, but the houses here are not prepared for hurricanes.
Keep us updated on how your nephew is doing.

(33,588 posts)Just had our first tornado warning here.
The wind has continued to pick up and things are now hitting the house. The lights started flickering off and on about an hour ago.
I could probably use some vibes, too. I'm sure a lot of us could right now.
It's probably time to burn some sage.

(27,834 posts)I'm sending out every vibe I have to people in the path of this horrible storm. I was up for most of the night watching the Weather Channel worrying about people I've never met but have come to know on DU. After I mow the lawn, I'll probably tune back in.
The neighborhood where my niece lived in Tampa is totally flooded. Not sure about where my other nephew lived but that was Pensacola so no doubt there's damage.
Both are REALLY glad they moved back to Michigan.

(69,364 posts)We are all in the same boat. As the earth heats up we're going to see more extreme weather events. Whether it's hurricanes tearing across the country (Helene is now affecting Chicago!), tornadoes, floods, mud slides, earthquakes, wildfires, drought, blizzards - everybody is going to have to contend with things.
We can act like MAGATs and point and laugh at people experiencing misfortunes, or we can recognize that we're all in this together, and pull together to support one another.
I know which vibe I want.

(69,364 posts)There are downed trees blocking his driveway. Phone service is at about 50% and intermittent. Cell towers got knocked down.
The local news says that every road in Western North Carolina is closed. The flooding is unbelievable.
I hope everyone there stays safe.

(1,783 posts)But it jogged to the west and all we've gotten is more of the rain we've been getting for pretty much a week already.
Good energy to all in the path, my heart is with them all.
