'I would say no': 'Extreme' Texas Republican makes shocking declaration on public radio
A Republican lawmaker fighting to hold onto his competitive Texas seat said Thursday he'd force a daughter to have her baby if she'd been impregnated by rape.
Texas House Rep. John Lujan made this claim on Texas Public Radio during a lengthy interview about key campaign issues in his race against Democratic candidate Kristian Carranza.
If I had a daughter, and that would have been, you know, it would have been a rape," Lujan said. "I would say no, we're going to have the baby.
Lujan represents south Bexar County Texas House District 118, once a reliable win for Democrats until he won a 2021 special election and the 2022 midterms by 52 percent, according to TPR.

(76,957 posts)He won in '22 with 52% of the vote.
Lots of those county positions went D in '22.
This may have been a really stupid thing to say in that district.

(34,545 posts)It was flipped during a 2021 special election. However, it got gerrymandered afterward to keep Lujan in.

(28,836 posts)Many Republicans don't believe that rape should be an exception. This shouldn't be shocking to anyone.
He won in 2022 with 52% of the vote, not by 52%.

(38,910 posts)It's all stuff by RW Catholic relatives would say: the fetus has the right to gestation and birth; it's not the fetus' fault that it's a product of rape, why should the child be killed for the sin of it's father, etc.
It's all hypotheticals, so holding to idealized positions is easy.

(130,810 posts)There's only the raped, traumatized daughter who will have to endure a pregnancy and childbirth that she didn't expect, want or ask for. There's no we, there's only her. What kind of a father would wish that kind of pain on his own daughter?

(34,545 posts)I think he's just spouting BS. Maybe he thinks his district will support this. It's a flipped district, but it's a conservative Democratic district.
I met a few Democrats who would not vote for Beto in 2022 because he supported abortion. "I will vote for every Democrat on the ballot but him" was the response I got. Just mentioning the "A" word is kinda like "coming for your guns".

He supports vouchers and that's reason enough to vote him out!

Yeah, yeah, yeah....blah, blah, blah
You know if I was asked that question, I would have replied that it would be my daughter's decision.

(3,213 posts)If you have any doubt, tune in the culture-war shows on pretty much any religious right media network, particularly those affiliated with conservative or radtrad Catholicism (EWTN, Relevant Radio). Positions like this are reiterated multiple times a day, not as opinion, but as dogma. There are any number of thought-terminating clichés used as justification: "killing the baby doesn't make the rape go away", "abortion creates another tragedy", etc. The propaganda is quite carefully thought out by these people.
