Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) on Thursday warned that if Democrats follow through on Vice President Harriss pledge to eliminate the filibuster to codify abortion protections, it would turn America into California by unleashing a flood of liberal reforms.
He said Democrats would expand the Supreme Court once they eliminated the 60-vote threshold for passing legislation through the Senate, noting liberals strong antipathy for the court, which now has a 6-3 conservative majority.
So it would fundamentally, in my view, turn America to California, he told Politicos Playbook in an interview.
And I think that is a major structural change to the country, he warned.

And that's a bad thing? I'd prefer it over Kentucky.

(1,250 posts)... California is far more preferable as is the California Dream in the Golden State. And, Mitchie, it's a whole lot better now that all those rightwing Republican Nazi assholes have left the Golden State (may they relocate to your state).
SACRAMENTO California is leading the nations economic growth. Since April, Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that the state has retained its title as the worlds fifth largest economy, broken tourism-spending records, increased its population, created thousands of fast food jobs, has the most companies on the Fortune 500 list, and expanded businesses in San Francisco.
Theres only one state with a dream the California Dream. Built on opportunity, promise, and ingenuity, California is the nations economic driver and the place people across the globe look to to see whats possible. Thats why we continue to grow businesses, expand our economy, break records, and create thousands of jobs across the state.
Governor Gavin Newsom
Worlds fifth largest economy
California is the 5th largest economy in the world for the seventh consecutive year, with a nominal GDP of nearly $3.9 trillion in 2023 and a growth rate of 6.1% since the year prior, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. On a per capita basis, California is the second largest economy in the world among large economies.
Highest level of tourism spending
California has the largest market share of tourism in the nation. Travel spending in the state reached an all-time high of $150.4 billion last year, surpassing the record $144.9 billion spent in 2019 spending that is 3.8% higher than 2019 and 5.6% higher than 2022.
The new travel-spending record generated $12.7 billion in state and local tax revenue by visitors in 2023, marking a 3% increase over 2019. Tourism created 64,900 new jobs in 2023, bringing total industry employment to 1,155,000.
Increasing population
Californias population increased by 67,000 people last year to 39,128,162, according to data by the California Department of Finance. The states population growth can be attributed to an increase in legal foreign immigration and natural population increasing. This is the first year since 2020 that the state has seen a net increase.
Thousands of fast food jobs created
According to new state and federal employment data, Californias fast food industry has added jobs every month this year, including roughly 10,600 new jobs in the two months since Governor Newsom signed the fast food minimum wage bill into law.
Most companies on the Fortune 500 list
For the first time since 2014, California is home to the most Fortune 500 companies in the country beating out Texas, Florida, and all other states. From tech to finance to entertainment, the states diverse economy has 57 companies on the list, while Texas and New York are tied in second with 52 companies each.
Businesses are expanding
Last month, Visa opened up their new state-of-the-art headquarters in San Francisco. They are one of countless companies to recently announce new investments in the Golden State. Hamdi Ulukaya also announced he is re-establishing Anchor Brewing, Nintendo is opening up its second U.S. store in San Francisco, and Disneyland is expanding its theme park with a $1.9 billion investment.

(18,362 posts)As our great Molly Ivins dubbed him, otherwise known as George Walker Bush. He and his ilk made our state a fascist, and racist state. Our state became more undesirable under the reign of Texas Nazis, and Racist republicans in our state. Big opportunity here for rich carpetbaggers. Look no further than Ted Cruz, carpetbagged all the way from Canada to Texas to become our senator.
Texas will change eventually, hopefully this election cycle. I hope Colin Allred beats that foreign carpetbagger Ted Cruz so Texas can be represented by a Democrat that will help get shit done in the Senate. And in the process be more aligned with California.
Moscow Russia will always be the preferred country of the Republican Party!

(10,310 posts)The other day I was sitting in a coffee shop eavesdropping (one of my favorite pastimes) on a couple of twenty-something young men with thick southern accents. They were talking about why they were here in CA.
One said to the other: You can be successful here. You cant be successful anywhere else.
Of course some would argue thats not literally true, but it was true for those young men. Theres work here.
California dreamin is still a thing, because dreams can still come true.

(17,500 posts)It's why I could sell a two bed/1 bath, 850 sq. foot bungalow in Pacific Grove, and use the proceeds to buy half of the entire FUCKING state of Kentucky.
You mean every state...the entire United States...would be filled with educated, joyful, hard-working, compassionate people, stunning natural beauty, freedom to live, love and worship as they choose, have autonomy over their own bodies, and each state would be the 5TH largest economy in the world?
I'll take it Mitch.

There are small pockets of MAGAS, and the religiously insane/ fascists. They HATE not having control of others. Its their raison detra.
