WASHINGTON If she wins in November, Vice President Kamala Harris may face a hostile, Republican-controlled Senate in no mood to confirm the senior Cabinet officials shell need to run her administration.
Anticipating that scenario, Harris team is exploring whether to keep in place some of the Biden administration officials whove already been confirmed by the Senate and wouldnt need to face the gauntlet again, four people familiar with her transition planning said.
Her aides are also looking at the option of initially retaining some current officials so that she'd have more time to make staffing decisions. With only a few months to build a campaign after abruptly replacing President Joe Biden at the top of the ticket, Harris has had little time to focus on the makeup of a new administration, the people familiar with the planning said.
Harris' transition team has been identifying Cabinet members and ambassadors who might be willing to remain in their jobs after Bidens term ends, though no formal inquiry has gone out asking them if they would stay, the sources said.

(8,880 posts)GOP senators won't confirm anybody she wants because Trump will threaten them if they actually do their jobs.

(3,762 posts)That said, the GOP senators still might refuse to confirm anybody even if he doesn't threaten them.

(61,033 posts)And there must be a way that his deputy takes over as interim/temp or whatever the designation would be.
It would be nice if Jack Smith could take over but rethugs would go absolutely crazy if we tried that.

(6,680 posts)She's perhaps his greatest cabinet member, in terms of fundamentally turning around the raygunomics policies in place far too long after the evil old bastard was out of government.

(3,868 posts)Harris would be wise to keep as many as she wants for the beginning of her administration. She could phase in replacements later.

(68,952 posts). . . . . no need to confirm Sally Yates as the AG is independent (or some such)
I would LOVE to see the immunity bullshit used against the GOP.

(46,143 posts)Immunity applies to criminal prosecutions. While there are limited ways of filling a vacancy with an acting agency head, simply announcing someone as a cabinet level department head without obtaining the required senate confirmation would be struck down by the courts and any actions taken by that person would be null and void.
Not every "unlawful" act is a crime -- and immunity only addresses criminal prosecutions.

(35,075 posts)I don't know if this article is true, but it reeks of defeatism before we even get started. What's wrong with DEMANDING a return to decency and normalcy and shaming the fuck out of gop obstructionists who want to keep our country in the past and not ready to act in the event of an emergency?
ENOUGH!
We should no longer accept this bullshit from the GOP. Name them. Shame them. Rinse. Repeat.
I am in Georgia right now and tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of us are without power. Thankfully, I'm not one of them. But I have clients who haven't had power since Thursday night. Why is that? It's because our country has not innovated and stepped into the future with updated infrastructure. It's disgusting when you think about it. We deserve better. We cannot continue to allow weird and creepy hatemongers to stifle progress.

(60,186 posts)I would have kept it quiet until after the election. Its OK for us to contemplate it. Its OK for them to contemplate it, too, but not helpful to even mention it before the election.

She can appoint tempory people like trump was going to do to get around Senate approval.

(1,750 posts)Garland had a lot to lose if Trump wins. If Harris wins, his legacy will be saved. Garland had done some good stuff but it has been wiped out by his stint as AG. Harris win would help him retire with some peace of mind. For all I know, he may be able to bring Trump to court after elections and before Jan 26th. A conviction would also help his legacy
