My dad was without power for 22 days in Florida in 2004, a year of multiple hurricanes crisscrossing the state. His land line never quit, something I was grateful for because I was teaching him how to do things like heat frozen dinners in plastic trays over a charcoal grill.

That land line was his life line because nothing else in that town was working.
