I grew up in Cincinnati during the era of the Big Red Machine. Pete Rose was a hit machine and quite a character - and very controversial (became a degenerate gambler who bet on the Reds while he was the manager etc). Interestingly, Pete was born and raised in Cincinnati.

I hated him when he played, but also thought he should be reinstated and elected to the Hall of Fame. Maybe now that will happen

in an exhibition game in spring training back in 1963 while sitting on the bench with Mickey Mantle. Rose was walked in that game and he ran to 1st base. Ford quipped to Mantle -- there goes Charlie Hustle.
