MA-SEN: John Deaton, Elizabeth Warren's GOP challenger, says she misled voters on his abortion-rights stance

Personal injury attorney and cryptocurrency advocate John Deaton, who is running against Elizabeth Warren for US Senate this year, took to the State House steps Tuesday to address what he called “misinformation” about his stance on abortion.

“You couldn’t have a more fierce advocate for women’s rights,” Deaton, who is a father to three girls, told reporters on Beacon Hill. He supports access to abortion and backs Massachusetts’ comprehensive laws protecting the right to reproductive care.

The Swansea Republican said he had challenged Warren to five debates, including a single-issue debate on abortion. The incumbent Democrat has agreed to two televised debates, which will take place Oct. 15 and Oct. 17.

Deaton’s move to clarify his abortion-rights position underscores the challenge the Republican candidate faces running statewide in liberal-leaning Massachusetts, where voters largely support the right to abortion, at a time when the national GOP brand is associated with efforts to curtail reproductive rights.
