WI-SEN: Outside groups pour more than $100 million into Baldwin-Hovde Wisconsin Senate race
WASHINGTON – The race for Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin’s Senate seat has seen more than $100 million in outside spending as Democrats and Republicans battle over the airwaves with just a month until the election.
Outside groups from both sides of the aisle as of the beginning of October had poured similar sums into the swing state race. Democrat-aligned groups had spent or reserved upwards of $57 million across all paid media advertising in Wisconsin to Republicans’ more than $53 million, according to an analysis of ad data.
That’s on top of what the individual campaigns are spending. Baldwin accounted for about $42 million in additional past advertising and future reservations, and her Republican opponent, the multimillionaire banker Eric Hovde, had put about $20 million into advertising of his own by the start of the month.
But insiders in both parties said they expected Republicans to eliminate that Democratic advertising advantage in the final weeks of the campaign — largely due to Hovde’s own week-to-week advertising investments and a recent influx of cash for TV, radio and digital ads from Senate Republicans’ campaign arm.
